California is the fifth largest economy in the world. A powerhouse of innovation, ingenuity, and indefatigable talent. Our success is not an accident. It is a product of our commitment to competition and a fair market.
Illegal, anticompetitive behavior dampens California’s economy, limits businesses big and small, and hurts consumers.
That’s why this week, I, alongside the U.S. Department of Justice and a bipartisan coalition of 30 state attorneys general, filed a lawsuit against Live Nation, the parent company of Ticketmaster, for blocking competition and operating a monopoly. Their actions have left fans, artists, and venues no choice but to go through them. In that vacuum of competition, they have been able to deliver a subpar product. Their anticompetitive behavior hurts the music industry and fans, and violates the law. We are demanding accountability and a fair market for fans, venues, and artists.
In solidarity,
Rob

Standing Up for Consumers and our Economy
California DOJ’s recently announced lawsuit against Live Nation continues our ongoing efforts to protect the innovation and creativity that fuels California’s economy. Live Nation imposed its dominance of the live concert industry by manipulating the marketplace — sending ripples of economic injustice throughout our state that hurt artists, their fans, and our economy. This lawsuit sends a clear message: Here in California, we’re committed to protecting consumers, holding industry accountable, enforcing antitrust laws, and ensuring a fair and competitive market.

Safeguarding Housing Access
We all must do our part to improve housing access and keep Californians secure in their homes. California’s Tenant Protection Act is one powerful tool in our toolbelt that protects renters from unscrupulous landlords, illegal rent increases, and evictions without just cause. This week, my office issued an information bulletin to city attorneys and county counsel, alerting them of their new authority to enforce this law to stand up for tenants in their communities.

Cracking Down on Sex Trafficking
Using the internet to target children for sex is a reprehensible and despicable crime. This week, our Human Trafficking/Sexual Predator Apprehension Team announced the arrests of seven suspects as part of a three-day multiagency operation that held accountable human traffickers and child predators. Together, we can forge a safer future for all vulnerable individuals who rightfully deserve protection, freedom, and justice.

Advocating for Student Loan Relief
Most students have no choice but to go into significant debt to afford higher education. U.S. borrowers currently hold over $1.7 trillion in federal student loan debt; 3.8 million Californians owe over $142 billion of this debt. I support the U.S. Department of Education’s efforts to expand debt relief to more federal student loan borrowers and urge them to quickly apply relief.

Fighting the Climate Crisis
We cannot let groundless claims derail effective action against this climate crisis. That’s why we intervened to lead a multistate coalition in defense of the Biden Administration’s emission standards for trucks and heavy-duty vehicles. The rule will not only protect our air quality and help us fight the climate crisis by reducing one billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions, but will create tens of billions of dollars in climate benefits, public health benefits, and annual operational savings for the trucking industry. The rule is under attack by Republican-led states and the fossil fuel industry. I’m proud to lead its defense against arguments that are not based in fact, science, or common sense.

Resource Corner: Your Abortion Rights
California has strong laws in place protecting reproductive freedom, including the right to safe and legal abortion. In California:
- You have the right to an abortion. You do not need to provide a reason for why you are seeking an abortion.
- You have the right to confidentiality. If you are married, generally your spouse will not be notified about your abortion.
- You have the right to obtain an abortion without parental consent. If you are a minor, generally your parents or guardians will not be notified about your abortion.
- You have the right to have your prescription for medicine to bring about an abortion filled in a timely manner.
- You have the right to access abortion services for little to no charge. Abortion services should generally be covered by your health insurance.
- You have the right to have an abortion performed by a trained professional.
- Only authorized healthcare providers, such as licensed doctors, nurses-midwives, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, with proper training, can perform abortions.
- You have the right to ask your healthcare provider if they have objections to certain forms of medical care. Healthcare providers are allowed to refuse to perform abortions for moral, ethical, or religious reasons.
