Native Peoples have called this land home long before it was known as California, and to this day, more American Indians and Alaska Natives live here than anywhere else in the United States. Yet, the struggles they and their ancestors have endured, and continue to endure, have been nothing short of brutal. We cannot erase our dark history, but we can recognize it and vow to break the cycle.
Today, that must include addressing the Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons crisis that plagues our tribal communities, especially Indigenous women and girls.
At California DOJ, we are committed to tackling this deadly crisis, and seeking justice for victims and their families. This means listening to Indigenous communities, like we are through our Missing in California Indian Country events. It also means taking action, like we did when we secured a 26-years-to-life sentence for the murder of Milton “Yogi” Patrick McGarva, a citizen of the Pit River Tribe who was tragically stabbed to death by his partner. At DOJ, we’re here to listen and learn, advocate and take action, and, more than anything else, we’re here to be a partner to our tribal communities.
In solidarity,
Rob
