Our country is being held hostage by an epidemic of gun violence and a gun industry that’s all too happy to profit off of it. It’s become our new normal to regularly hear about mass shootings on the news, to scope out emergency exits at the movies, and to worry about our children at school.
We need to do everything we can — in courtrooms, state Capitols, and in our communities — to address this crisis head on before another person is killed by senseless gun violence.
At California DOJ, we are. We’re getting illicit guns off our streets through our Armed and Prohibited Persons Program; we’re defending our nation-leading, commonsense gun laws; and we’re advocating for stronger federal regulations to tamp down on dangerous ghost guns. We all deserve to live without the fear of gun violence — I’m fighting to make that a reality for all Californians.
Your partner in the fight,
Rob

Protecting Communities from Gun Violence
As California's top law enforcement official, my utmost priority is upholding public safety. This week, I announced the release of California’s Armed and Prohibited Persons System Report 2023, which details another year of progress in our important work to recover and keep weapons from illegally armed people. I also joined a multistate coalition in advocating for federal regulations that help keep ghost guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals. When firearms fall into the wrong hands, it endangers all of us. That's why my office will continue fighting tooth and nail to tackle this issue and protect our communities from the looming threat posed by gun violence.

Reducing Harm from Medical Debt
Medical debt is often unforeseen and not a reliable indicator of financial risk, yet it can unfairly prevent Californians from getting loans, renting an apartment, or getting a job. That's why this week, I joined with Senator Monique Limón and prominent consumer advocacy organizations to unveil new legislation that prohibits medical debt from being reported on credit reports. Senate Bill 1061 is an important step forward in ending the harmful spiral where people have unforeseen, catastrophic medical debt and become unhoused, unemployed, or without a vehicle to get to work.

Cracking Down on Fraudulent Charities
This week, my office joined the Federal Trade Commission and a multistate coalition in filing a lawsuit against Cancer Recovery Foundation, a sham cancer charity that collected millions of dollars from donors but provided little monetary assistance to cancer survivors and their families. Charities like Cancer Recovery Foundation that mislead people will be held accountable. I am committed to protecting California's charity donors, beneficiaries, and organizations from the harm caused by deceptive charities.

Safeguarding Kids' Online Privacy
As kids and young adults increasingly socialize, learn, and work online, we must guard against their sensitive data being exploited and monetized. This week, I joined a multistate letter supporting a federal government effort that would enable states to strengthen restrictions on companies selling children’s data. Our children’s childhood experience should not be for sale – it’s time to elevate and protect kids' online privacy and safety.

Fighting Discrimination in Health Care
At the California Department of Justice, we are fighting to safeguard the health care rights of all, especially those who are most vulnerable. This week, I led 21 attorneys general in opposing a cruel Idaho state law that criminalizes medical treatment for transgender minors seeking gender-affirming care, blocking their ability to access critical, lifesaving gender-affirming care, putting them at risk and further marginalizing them. California will not back down in the face of discrimination, wherever it occurs.

When someone is in the midst of healing, the last thing they should have to worry about is medical debt tanking their credit.
I’m proud to sponsor Senator Monique Limón's SB 1061, new legislation to prevent medical debt from being reported on credit reports.
