Part of my role as the People’s Attorney includes fighting for the health, wellbeing, and safety of every Californian. That can come in many forms, and this week it ran the gamut:
✔️ We introduced a bill to tackle the Black maternal mortality crisis and reduce implicit bias in our healthcare system.
✔️ We seized 720,000 fentanyl pills in San Diego.
✔️ We arrested a suspect with a large cache of illegal firearms and ammunition in Richmond.
Whether I’m fighting for a more equitable healthcare system for all Californians, fighting to protect our children from dangerous and addictive substances, or fighting to rid our communities of gun violence — I’m here to fight for you.
Onward,
Rob

Fighting Racial Bias in Healthcare
The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world — a burden disproportionately borne by communities of color, especially Black women. It is unacceptable. This week, I joined Assemblymembers Lori Wilson and Dr. Akilah Weber, and members of the California Legislative Black Caucus, to introduce new legislation that will strengthen California’s resolve to provide equitable, high-quality, culturally appropriate healthcare for all patients. Assembly Bill 2319 is designed to save lives by making a transformational change in a system that has historically failed our mothers and babies, especially those of color. We must continue to address healthcare bias head-on.

Cracking Down on Illicit Drug Trafficking
This week, my office joined with federal and state agencies in a joint operation in San Diego County that resulted in the felony arrest of a suspect and the seizure of 720,000 fentanyl pills. I am grateful for the work of our special agents and law enforcement partners in getting these illicit and dangerous drugs off our streets. The California Department of Justice is all-in when it comes to protecting California families from the dangers of fentanyl.

Taking Down Organized Retail Crime
Organized retail crime will not be tolerated in California. This week, I announced charges against the ringleader of an organized retail crime scheme that spanned 21 counties and involved an estimated $8 million worth of beauty products. She allegedly paid people to steal from Ulta Beauty stores, as well as other retail outlets, and would then sell the stolen cosmetic items on her Amazon storefront. As the top law enforcement official in our state, I am dedicated to actively pursuing and bringing to justice those who violate the law.

Safeguarding Veterans from Exploitation
Service members make incredible contributions and sacrifices for our nation — it’s essential that we have their backs. That's why this week I joined with Senator Caroline Menjivar to introduce a new law which seeks to protect veterans from claim sharks — individuals and organizations that are not accredited, but still charge veterans for help with their benefits claims. We must honor and protect those who have sacrificed so much to protect us.

Preventing Gun Violence
In 2006, California became the first state in the nation to establish a system for tracking firearm owners who fall into a prohibited status through its Armed and Prohibited Persons System (APPS). This week, DOJ agents and our law enforcement partners carried out an arrest that demonstrates exactly why APPS is vital for the safety of our communities. In our efforts to retrieve guns from an individual alleged to be legally barred from owning firearms, we found hundreds of allegedly illegal weapons and approximately one million rounds of ammunition. My office will continue to work vigorously to keep illegal weapons out of the hands of dangerous individuals and protect California's communities.

Resource Corner
As our state recovers from a series of winter storms, I urge Californians to stay safe, care for their neighbors, and listen to guidance from state and local officials.
- Under California law, price gouging on housing, gas, food, and other essential supplies during a state of emergency is illegal.
- Sellers are prohibited from charging a price that exceeds, by more than 10%, the price they charged for an item before a state or local declaration of emergency.
If you see price gouging — or if you've been the victim of it — I encourage you to immediately file a complaint with my office online at oag.ca.gov/report or contact your local police department or sheriff’s office.
