This week marked the one-year anniversary of the mass shootings in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay. Within the span of three days, 18 individuals were murdered, 10 were injured, and many families and friends were forever traumatized. Those were just two of the more than 650 mass shootings that took place across our country in 2023.
We also know that there are so many other gun deaths that happen in our communities every single day — deaths that will never make headlines. In fact, on average, there have been over 48,000 gun deaths in America per year, over 130 per day.
Gun violence is a uniquely American disease that we must address with bold, urgent action. At California DOJ, we are. This week, we kicked off the first in a new series of community-centered discussions about preventing gun violence and ending this deadly epidemic. There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to gun violence, but we can make progress if we stand united in our shared determination to create a better, safer future for our children.
In solidarity, Rob

Preventing Gun Violence
Preventing gun violence must begin in our communities by strengthening relationships and fostering an environment of support and collaboration. I was proud this week to work together with our local partners in Sacramento to identify best practices, foster community involvement, and work toward community-driven solutions to eliminate gun violence.

Defending Patients' Access to Healthcare
I am proud to help lead the fight for access to healthcare and to keep bad actors out of our marketplace. In 2022, California, alongside our federal and state partners, won a lawsuit against “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli, holding him to account for his greedy scheme to increase the price of a lifesaving medication by more than 4,000%. This week, an appellate court rejected Shkreli's attempt to appeal that decision and reaffirmed his lifetime ban from the pharmaceutical industry.

Enforcing California's Housing Laws
Amid our state's housing crisis, it's critical for cities to provide their fair share of housing to residents. My office secured an important legal win in this goal, compelling a prompt resolution of the enforcement case against Huntington Beach for its failure to adopt a housing plan compliant with state law. We are pleased that Huntington Beach will now face quick accountability by the court to help ensure its residents have the housing they need. We’ll continue to use every legal tool available to hold those who break state housing laws accountable.

Fighting Fentanyl Trafficking
Fentanyl is a threat to our communities, as it is cheap, potent, and very lethal. This week, we arrested and filed charges against three drug traffickers alleged to be responsible for bringing 30,000 fentanyl pills across the Mexico and California border. I am proud of the special agents working hard in our Fentanyl Enforcement Program, and confident that our investigative resources and legal support will help stop the flow of fentanyl into our state and keep it out of our communities.

Standing Up for Reproductive Rights
This week, I supported a legal challenge of an Idaho law that attacks reproductive rights, and that not only puts pregnant Idahoans at risk, but also threatens the freedom of people in other states. My office remains unwavering in our commitment to protect access to reproductive healthcare, in California and across the nation. Individuals should be making healthcare decisions with their doctor, free from political interference.
