This week we welcomed in a new year and new laws that will allow us to better protect Californians. Laws that tackle public safety, housing, reproductive justice, consumer protection, worker protection, and so much more.
I was proud to sponsor and support a number of critical bills that took effect this week, including a law that strengthens my office’s ability to enforce state housing laws and another that prevents predatory exclusive real estate listing agreements.
As the People’s Attorney, I work for you, and that means defending and enforcing laws that protect the rights, freedom, and safety of all Californians. As we move through the new year, I look forward to more opportunities to do just that.
In solidarity, Rob Bonta

New Laws in 2024
We’re looking forward to a new year with stronger protections for Californians. This year, the following laws I sponsored in 2023 go into effect to:
-
Prevent gun violence by strengthening the processing of firearms background checks (AB 1406), as well as expanding DOJ’s authority to inspect firearms dealers for compliance of gun transfer and safety measures (AB 1420).
-
Improve housing access by strengthening enforcement of state housing laws (AB 1485).
-
Increase consumer protections by safeguarding consumers from hidden fees (SB 478), addressing high gas prices by increasing transparency and oversight of California’s oil industry (SBX1-2), preventing predatory exclusive real estate listing agreements (AB 1345), and establishing the Victims of Consumer Fraud Restitution Fund (AB 1366).
-
Protect workers by limiting forced arbitration agreements and frivolous delays (SB 365).

Promoting a Fair and Equitable Justice System
Unfortunately, we know the criminal justice system is not infallible and charging decisions are vulnerable to unconscious bias. This is a reality we cannot ignore and must work to correct. This week, my office released guidelines to help reduce the potential for unconscious bias to influence charging decisions in legal cases. These guidelines will assist prosecutors in performing their duties in accordance with California law and more importantly, promote a more fair and equitable justice system for all individuals.

Protecting Californians with Disabilities
Nearly one quarter of adults in California have a disability. Through our Disability Rights Bureau, we’re working to protect and advance the rights of all people with disabilities in California. This week, my office released information for Californians to learn more about disability rights:

Promoting Transparency and Increasing Trust
This week, the California Racial and Identity Profiling Advisory Board announced the release of its annual report on police stops across California. Over the last several years, we’ve collected and analyzed information on more than 16 million police encounters in our state. With the support of DOJ staff, the RIPA Board has continued to issue key recommendations for our law enforcement agencies to promote transparency and take critical steps to enhance, and in some cases, repair the public trust.
