This week I had the opportunity to join climate leaders from around the world at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP 28. It was inspiring to come together with activists, litigators, state and federal agencies, tribal leaders, and elected officials who are all united by one common goal: to end the climate crisis.
I was proud to share the work California DOJ is leading to hold to account industries that have helped pushed us into this crisis. That work includes our lawsuit against five of the biggest oil companies and an industry trade association for decades of deception about the harms of their products to our climate, and our investigation into petrochemical and fossil fuel companies for their role in the global plastics pollution crisis.
The reality is that the climate devastation we’re witnessing will only get worse if we don’t take serious and urgent action to change course. I’m determined to do my part by protecting our communities from industries that put profits above all else and by defending and enforcing California’s nation-leading environmental laws. Our people and our planet deserve nothing less.
In solidarity, Rob

Fighting Trafficking and Exploitation
There is no place for human trafficking in California — which is why I established the California DOJ Human Trafficking and Sexual Predator Apprehension Teams in 2021. To date, our teams have arrested approximately 677 traffickers and assisted or supported 754 victims in operations throughout the state. And this week, we announced operations with law enforcement partners leading to the arrest of 21 suspects accused of seeking to exploit children and victims of sex trafficking in San Diego County and Kings County.

Standing Against LGBTQ+ Discrimination
No one should ever be denied access to lifesaving medical care for simply being who they are. This week, I led 20 attorney generals in opposing Florida’s actions that target and discriminate against transgender individuals seeking healthcare benefits that they are eligible for under federal law.

Safeguarding Immigrant Children
I am committed to ensuring that all children in California are protected and cared for. This week, I led a coalition of 19 attorneys general in calling for the federal government to provide stronger protections for unaccompanied immigrant children.

Protecting Free Speech
Protecting Californians' rights and liberties is of vital importance to me. This week, I announced an agreement with Kern County in which the county committed to necessary reforms after allegations of free-speech violations. My office will continue working to safeguard the constitutional rights of Californians.

Video of the Week

This week, I joined San Francisco leaders to launch United Playaz's gun buy-back event. At California DOJ, we’re defending our gun laws in court, confiscating illegally held firearms, and cracking down on untraceable ghost guns. But we can’t do it alone. We need to fight the gun violence epidemic at every level. Community-based prevention efforts like this are part of the solution.

Stop Human Trafficking
If you or someone you know is being forced to engage in any activity and cannot leave — whether it is commercial sex, housework, farm work, construction, factory, retail, or restaurant work, or any other activity — call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 to access help and services. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911. Additional information and resources to support survivors of human trafficking are available here.
