California is facing a housing crisis of epic proportion, one that requires all of us — from state to local governments to community organizations — to come together to address it head-on.
That’s why, two years ago, I launched our Housing Justice Team to protect tenants, enforce our housing laws, and advance housing access, affordability, and equity across California. This week, our team secured a victory when a court rejected the City of Huntington Beach’s attempt to exempt themselves from state housing laws.
Let me be clear: No one is exempt from this crisis, and no one is above the law when it comes to solving it. The California DOJ is committed to ensuring all California families have a place to call home.

Tackling the Housing Crisis
I am immensely proud of what the California DOJ's Housing Justice Team has accomplished in the two years since I launched it. Here are just a few of its successes:
Tackling California’s housing crisis is a top priority — and with the work of the past two years, we are just getting started.

Protecting Reproductive Rights
Emergency medical care saves lives: No one should fear being denied the care they need to survive. I will not stand by as anti-choice states like Texas trample over the rights and protections that allow people to live healthy, safe lives. That’s why this week, I co-led a nationwide coalition in support of plaintiffs, including 15 women whose health, fertility, and lives were put at risk by the state's cruel anti-abortion laws.

Protecting Elders from Abuse
All too often, our senior citizens are made victims of abuse and fraud by those they should be able to trust the most — including their own family. This week, my office secured guilty verdicts against a Placer County woman for committing financial fraud against her elderly mother. We will not tolerate abuse or crimes targeting our state’s elders.

Ensuring a Fair and Competitive Economy
This week we saw the conclusion of the 10-week bench trial in United States v. Google. My office proudly joined the U.S. Department of Justice in seeking to hold accountable the company for its monopoly on general internet search services and search-based advertising. I am confident in the strength of our case, and look forward to closing arguments in May and a verdict expected next year. The California DOJ has two additional antitrust cases pending against Google. We continue our efforts to protect competition for consumers and businesses in the marketplace.
