In California and across the nation, we’re witnessing a devastating rise in young people dying by accidental fentanyl overdose. We can’t stress enough how dangerous fentanyl is. It’s cheap, potent, and lethal.
That’s why the work California DOJ is doing to get dealers and traffickers out of our communities is critical, and why the advocacy and partnership of parents, community organizations, law enforcement and health agencies is vital. The more we can work together to educate our children and our communities about the dangers of fentanyl, the better.
This week, a Roseville man who supplied a 15-year-old girl with the fentanyl that led to her death was sentenced to 15 years to life after being convicted of homicide. While we cannot bring that young woman back into her parents’ arms, we can — and will — remain committed to holding dealers accountable and to protecting our children from this deadly drug.

Holding Poison Peddlers Accountable
Throughout the nation, as we've seen a marked increase in fentanyl use and associated deaths, we continue to address the impacts of the opioid crisis. We grieve for the young lives lost to this drug. We hope that this week's sentencing in Placer County serves as a strong warning to the poison peddlers in California's neighborhoods: We will hold you accountable. I thank the Placer County District Attorney and our law enforcement partners for working with us to make our community safer.

Protecting Consumers from Hidden Fees
With the signing of my sponsored bill, Senate Bill 478, California now has the most effective piece of legislation in the nation to tackle hidden fees. The price Californians see will be the price they pay. I am deeply grateful to Senators Dodd and Skinner, the authors of SB 478, for their commitment to protecting consumers.

Safeguarding Housing
When it comes to addressing our housing crisis, there’s not a moment to waste. Time is of the essence. That's why I sponsored Assembly Bill 1485, which will allow my office to represent the state’s interests more easily in lawsuits filed by third parties to enforce our housing laws. I am grateful to Assemblymember Haney and Senator Wiener for authoring AB 1485 to help protect housing in California.

Defending Gun Safety Laws
We secured a court order this week in our defense of California’s restrictions on large capacity magazines, a key component in our efforts to fight gun violence. With this decision, the ban remains in effect. Californians should know that the purchase, manufacture, or transfer of large-capacity magazines is against the law. We will continue to fight for California’s authority to keep our communities safe from weapon enhancements that cause mass casualties.

Fighting for Reproductive Rights
To millions of Americans, meaningful access to medication abortion serves as a lifeline, and a key to a healthier and better future. Medication abortion has been recognized for decades as exceedingly safe and effective — so safe that it presents a lower risk of serious complications than taking Tylenol, having a wisdom tooth removed, using Viagra, or getting a colonoscopy. California continues to stand with our partners in voicing our full support for patients’ meaningful access to this vital medication.
