Big Oil knew fossil fuels would cause climate change as early as the 1960s, and purposefully hid the truth and lied to the public to make record profits.
California DOJ has sued five of the major oil companies and their trade association to hold them responsible for their decades-long campaign of deception.
Big Oil has spent millions to cover up the truth, discredit scientists, and mislead consumers, pocketing massive profits along the way. Meanwhile, Californians have been forced to spend billions to weather the devastating repercussions of climate change. These greedy corporations need to be held accountable — that’s where the California DOJ comes in.
In solidarity,
Rob

Holding Big Oil Accountable for Decades of Lies
Oil and gas companies have privately known the truth for decades — that the burning of fossil fuels leads to climate change — but have fed us lies and mistruths to further their record-breaking profits at the expense of our environment. Enough is enough. With our lawsuit, California becomes the largest geographic area and the largest economy to take these giant oil companies to court. It is time these companies pay to abate the harm they have caused.

Protecting Consumers' Privacy
Every day, nearly 90% of internet searches in the U.S. are on Google. It’s our right to know how our data is collected, stored, and used — and to opt out if we decide to. After investigating Google, we found that the internet giant deceived users, telling them it would no longer track their location if they opted out, but actually continued to track users’ movements for its own commercial gain. This week, my office announced a $93 million settlement with Google over their violation of California’s consumer protection laws.

Getting Illegal Narcotics Off Our Streets
This week, my team announced the arrest of a suspect and the seizure of more than 150 pounds of narcotics, including 485,000 fentanyl pills as part of a joint operation with CHP in Fresno County. Whether through the seizure of illicit fentanyl through our ongoing enforcement efforts or by bringing California billions of dollars through our lawsuits and investigative efforts to hold the opioid industry accountable, the California Department of Justice is all-in when it comes to protecting California families from the dangers of fentanyl.

Holding the Opioid Industry Accountable
California will continue to advocate and fight for justice, relief, and healing for the countless families whose lives have been upended by the opioid crisis. Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family bear responsibility for much of the grief and loss caused by the opioid crisis. Those who suffered as a result of their misconduct deserve the option to seek justice in court against the Sacklers.

Fighting Hate Together
We must stand united against hate and extremism and I’m proud to stand with our local partners throughout California. This week we met with local partners in Fresno to discuss and develop solutions to combat the rise of hate, foster community-based responses, and provide resources where they are most needed. Our message to Californians: We see you, we support you, and we will do our part to ensure that every Californian feels, and is, safe in their cities and communities.

Our legal team presented arguments before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia this week in defense of California’s ability to enforce its Advanced Clean Cars Standards and other standards for emissions from new motor vehicles. Vehicle pollution continues to be a pressing problem in California. I’m grateful that my team was in court this week vigorously defending California’s leadership on clean air.
