Across the nation and even in California, a wave of anti-LGBTQ+ attacks from state legislatures to school boards threaten to isolate, discriminate against, and harm our transgender and gender-nonconforming youth.
As Attorney General, I have a simple message for all LGBTQ+ students: I see you, you belong, and the California DOJ has your back.
Whether we’re fighting to stop forced outing policies in schools, upholding every student’s right to education, or defending inclusive curricula, I’m committed to using every tool in our toolbox to ensure transgender and gender-nonconforming youth are protected, their rights are safeguarded, and they have access to all the resources to which they are entitled.

Protecting LGBTQ+ Students
I filed a lawsuit this week challenging Chino Valley Unified School District’s forced outing policy for wrongfully and unconstitutionally discriminating against and violating the privacy rights of LGBTQ+ students. The forced outing policy wrongfully endangers the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of transgender and gender-nonconforming students who lack an accepting environment in the classroom and at home. Our message to Chino Valley Unified and all school districts in California is loud and clear: We will never stop fighting for the civil rights of LGBTQ+ students.

Fighting for Housing for All
This week, we reached a settlement with the City of San Bernardino for violating California law to ensure that all cities build their fair share of housing. No city is spared from that legal obligation. It is not a choice. It is the law. I applaud the City of San Bernardino’s city council, and its planning and legal team, for recognizing that public resources should be directed at collaborating, rather than further litigating, our way out of California’s housing crisis.

Working Together to Tackle Illegal Cannabis
Complex problems require creative and collaborative solutions. This week we announced an innovative new program that allows my office to better support local governments in our collective efforts to tackle illegal cannabis activities. We are confident that this new cost-effective program will have dramatic and measurable effects. I thank our first partner, the City of Fresno, and look forward to working together with communities throughout the state through this new approach to hold participants in the illegal cannabis market accountable.

Holding Deceptive Companies Accountable
This week, I announced a $1.6 million settlement against room rental app Roomster, a company that was, in simple terms, conning people seeking rental housing. With California experiencing a severe housing crisis, every part of the puzzle matters — from ensuring every city in the state follows the law and builds their fair share of housing, to making sure that fraudsters don’t get in the way of people finding rental housing.

Defending the Rights of Workers
Labor Day is this Monday, a day when we honor the workers and labor leaders who have helped to push our nation and our state forward. I grew up in the labor movement, and watched as my parents fought for better wages alongside Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. Now, I'm proud to lead the California DOJ as we make protecting the rights of workers a year-round effort. This week, we filed a brief in support of fair wages for federal contractors and celebrated a favorable decision we advocated for on behalf of McDonald's workers challenging no-poach agreements. We'll keep at it, because here in California, the fight for workers’ rights is part of our DNA.

Resource Corner
Well-intentioned or otherwise, charities and crowdfunding pages formed overnight to respond to disasters such as the Maui wildfires may lack the experience, contacts, and staff needed to respond to a disaster, or may be fraudulent. Before providing any monetary aid to those claiming to provide direct assistance to victims of disasters, I urge all Californians to take their time to research before donating.
