Our children have the right to feel safe, respected, and protected at school. As Attorney General of California, I’m committed to making that a reality and refuse to stand for anything less.
That includes everything from keeping our students safe from gun violence, to ensuring our schools teach LGBTQ+ history, to protecting the privacy and safety of transgender students.
As a father of three, it breaks my heart to think of the bullying, harassment, and hate our LGBTQ+ youth are forced to endure — unfortunately even sometimes in their own homes. We all have a responsibility to stand up for our LGBTQ+ youth, protect them from harm, and make sure they know: No matter who they love or how they identify, they are welcome here.

Standing Up for LGBTQ+ Students
The protection of every student’s privacy and safety is of utmost importance, and that includes protecting their right to choose when, how, and with whom they share their gender identity. That is a personal decision for them, and them alone. This week we informed the Chino Valley Unified School District that by passing a policy requiring the disclosure of a student’s gender identity without their consent, the district strips them of their freedom, violates their autonomy, and could potentially put the student in a harmful situation.

Securing Settlement for Unlawful Border Wall
In 2019 and 2020, California led coalitions of states in suing the Trump Administration for illegally diverting taxpayer funds to construct an unlawful border wall in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California. Now, the Trump Border Wall is officially a relic of the past, which is where it belongs. This week, we announced a settlement that puts a close to these lawsuits and brings funding for environmental mitigation projects and the confirmation of over $427 million in funding restored for military construction projects.

Defending Commonsense Gun Laws
States must have the ability to protect their citizens and communities from gun violence. That is why this Thursday, I filed a brief in support of a Minnesota law setting the minimum age at 21 for securing a permit to carry a handgun in public.

Protecting the Agriculture Industry
As America's largest agricultural producer and exporter, California is our nation’s breadbasket. California’s farmers produce 50% of the nation’s fruits, nuts, and vegetables; 20% of the milk; and more than 400 different agricultural commodities. Agriculture is a critical part of the California economy. This week, I was proud to stand with the USDA and the Biden-Harris Administration in announcing California's participation in an effort to protect competition and fair prices in the agriculture industry and related sectors.
