To me, 4th of July is as much a celebration as it is an opportunity to recommit to the promise America was founded upon: that we all share the equal right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
It’s an ambitious ideal that we haven’t quite reached, but fortunately we’re an ambitious and persistent nation. A nation determined to continue improving, progressing, and fighting for every single one of us — no matter how we look, where we’re from, how much money we have, who we love, or how we pray.
As Attorney General, the fight for your rights and freedoms is one of my top priorities. Whether it’s the right to live in communities safe from gun violence and hate, the right to reproductive freedom, or the right to breathe clean air and drink clean water — my job is to take on your fights and win. That’s my promise to you.

Protecting Section 8 Recipients
Section 8 recipients are some of the most vulnerable of California’s tenants. That’s why I issued letters to all housing authorities in the state, reminding them that tenants who receive Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers are protected under California’s Tenant Protection Act (TPA). I also called on local housing authorities to help protect California’s tenants by refusing to approve any rent increases that violate state or local laws.

Tackling Emissions in the Transportation Industry
In order to tackle climate change, we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation industry. That’s why, earlier this week, I led a coalition of 26 states and cities in submitting a comment letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) urging them to strengthen criteria for pollutant standards in certain light- and medium-duty highway vehicles.

Protecting Consumers from Anti-Competitive Practices
We need more, not less, competition in the airline industry. That’s why I issued a statement welcoming JetBlue’s decision to end its participation in the Northeast Alliance.

Fighting Abusive Conduct in Consumer Financial Markets
Abusive conduct has no place in our consumer financial markets. On Thursday, I joined a multistate coalition in submitting a comment letter to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), wholly endorsing its recently issued policy statement on abusive conduct in consumer financial markets.

Ringing in the Fourth of July in Alameda.
As we celebrate, we must also recommit to fighting until America finally reaches its founding ideals — that we are all equal, with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Resource Corner
State and federal law provides California tenants with critical protections. For example, you may be protected from overly high rent increases and certain types of evictions. There are also laws protecting you from discrimination, retaliation, and lockouts where the landlord has not gotten a court order to evict you. To learn more about your rights as a tenant, visit our Landlord-Tenant page. Additionally, the California Courts webpage has helpful information about landlord/tenant issues, including self-help information about evictions, rent control, security deposits and legal service programs that are available to help you. California’s Housing Is Key website also has information about eviction protections.
