Across California, families are sleeping in their cars. People are camped under freeways. Shelter space is scarce. It’s undeniable: We’re in the throes of a crisis.
The California DOJ’s Housing Justice Team is working tirelessly to combat this serious issue. This week, we were able to hold San Jose-based housing developer Green Valley Corporation to account for unlawfully raising rents and serving eviction notices to tenants. This marks the first time DOJ has enforced the Tenant Protection Act, a nation-leading housing law I was proud to co-author in 2019.
Everyone has a role to play in addressing the housing crisis. No one can do everything, but we all have to do something. Following the law should be a given first step. Now, more than ever, evading our housing laws isn’t only illegal, it’s unconscionable.

Protecting Tenants
Because of this week's settlement, impacted Green Valley employee tenants are getting financial relief. In addition, they are being protected from skyrocketing rent increases and evictions without just cause, including pretextual evictions that do not meet the Act’s requirements. There should be no doubt: Tenants have housing rights in California, and we have your back.

A Win for Native American Families
I applaud the U.S. Supreme Court for its decision this week upholding the Indian Child Welfare Act, and rejecting a challenge to the law. ICWA will continue to safeguard Native American children so that they can remain with their families, connected to their culture and as part of their respective tribes.

Seizing Illegal Guns
Firearms built at home by individuals who have not passed a background check and have not had their guns properly serialized leave law enforcement in the dark and endanger our communities. This week, we announced the arrests of suspects in the Visalia community, which is safer today, thanks to the work of the special agents from the California Department of Justice and our law enforcement partners in Tulare County. My office will continue to work actively every single day to end this gun violence epidemic and keep Californians safe.

Defending the Dignity and Safety of Migrants
This week my office issued a public records request to the Office of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Division of Emergency Management, as part of our ongoing law enforcement investigation into the conditions under which the migrants seeking asylum were brought into California pursuant to Florida’s so-called “Migrant Transportation Program.” These letters represent our commitment to transparency and justice. We need to understand the circumstances that led to the implementation of this operation – which was apparently paid for by Florida taxpayer dollars – and the decisions and directives that led to this questionable act.

Resource Corner
California’s seniors deserve to live healthy, happy, and financially secure lives. Unfortunately, bad actors continue to target seniors in fraudulent financial schemes. I urge California seniors and their loved ones to be vigilant about the common predatory scams targeting the elderly population. I encourage everyone to learn about financial scams and to report any fraudulent activity to law enforcement. On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and every day, the California Department of Justice remains committed to protecting our seniors from all forms of fraud and abuse.
