We’ve all been on the receiving end of a robocall — those annoying scams that claim to be calling with an urgent matter from the Social Security Administration, Medicare, an employer, or some other seemingly official entity. While they certainly are an annoyance, they have inflicted real financial harm on unsuspecting people.
This week, I joined 49 attorneys general in a bipartisan lawsuit against major telecom company, Avid Telecom, over billions of alleged illegal robocalls across the country.
Our lawsuit makes it clear: We cannot come to the phone right now, you cannot leave a message, and we won’t be calling you back. Robocall scams are not welcome in California.
Whether it’s putting an end to unwanted robocalls, going after corporate giants like Walmart, or ending hidden fees — California DOJ is here to protect California consumers.

Suing to Stop Robocall Scams
In addition to being a daily annoyance, robocalls can and do cause real financial damage. That's why this week we took Avid Telecom to court for delivering not hundreds, or thousands, or millions of robocalls — but billions of robocalls. We allege that Avid Telecom has violated federal and state laws, and we are confident that we will prevail.

Ending the Sale of Illegal Weapons
Illegal weapons have no place in California. This week we announced a settlement with Walmart over allegations that illegal weapons — specifically brass knuckles — were sold to California consumers by Walmart and by third-party sellers through Walmart’s website. This settlement makes crystal clear that online retailers are responsible for what they sell or allow to be sold in our state.

Dismantling Dangerous Criminal Groups
This week we announced the results of a multiagency operation in Fresno County targeting a violent criminal group. The operation resulted in the arrest of 34 suspects and the seizure of 64 illegal guns, as well as illicit drugs, including fentanyl. The arrests and seizure are the result of strong partnerships by law enforcement agencies in the Fresno area, and throughout our state, and send a strong message that criminal activity targeting our communities will not be tolerated.

Tobacco use is the number one preventable killer in the United States. Smoking-related illness accounts for approximately 40,000 deaths annually in California. Nicotine, a key component of cigarettes and most e-cigarettes, has been found to be highly addictive and harmful to the developing brains of children and young adults.
This week, DOJ announced it will begin accepting proposals for the 2023-2024 Tobacco Grant Program. The program aims to reduce the illegal sale of tobacco products, particularly to minors, by providing approximately $24.6 million in grant funding to eligible local agencies.
Local public agencies are encouraged to apply if they require funding to enforce state and local laws related to the illegal sale and marketing of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, to minors.
