Whether renting a car, booking a hotel room, or purchasing concert tickets, we all know how frustrating it is to get to the checkout and find out that something advertised as one price actually costs much more.
That might be when you notice a hidden fee — like a convenience, service, or resort fee — has been added to your purchase. This bait-and-switch practice costs consumer billions of dollars each year, and it’s happening more often.
This week I announced a bill that will help California families by making it crystal clear that it is against the law to advertise a price for a good or service and then tack on hidden fees.
Because in California, we believe that when you make a purchase, your final purchase price shouldn’t be a mystery. The price advertised should be the price you pay — simple as that.

Protecting Consumers From Hidden Fees
![Hidden Fees Graphic](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/CAOAG/2023/02/7169338/4580931/hidden-fees-social_crop.jpg) This week I stood with state leaders to level the playing field and demand transparency for California consumers with the introduction of a bill, SB 478, that will help put an end to hidden fees. We’re working together to fight for a fair marketplace and to stop this bait and switch scheme hurting California families.
Thank you to the authors, Senators Bill Dodd and Nancy Skinner, Assemblymember Marc Berman, as well as Robert Herrell of Consumer Federation of America and Sander Kushen of CALPIRG for your work in fighting for California consumers.

Fighting for Justice
![Post-Conviction Justice Unit Press Conference Photo](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/CAOAG/2023/02/7170610/post-conviction-justice-unit-press-conference_original.jpg) We fight each and every day to protect our communities and hold those who break the law accountable. Yet, despite our best efforts, we know our criminal legal system is not infallible. This week, I launched the first-ever Post-Conviction Justice Unit within the California Department of Justice as we march on in our fight for justice and make every effort to ensure the integrity of prosecutions in our state.

Expanding Access to Reproductive Care
![Woman Getting Prescription Filled](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/CAOAG/2023/02/7169365/4580935/prescription_crop.jpg) To millions of Americans, mifepristone and misoprostol — or medication abortion — aren’t just prescription medications, they are a protection, a lifeline, a key to a healthier and better future. Restricting access to medication does not make people safer: it only forces them to turn to desperate and unsafe measures. California stands proudly with our partners across the nation in full support of protecting and expanding access to reproductive care.

Defending Student Borrowers
![Student Struggling to Pay Debt](https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/CAOAG/2023/02/7169477/4580937/frustrated-bills_crop.jpg) For too long, our country’s student borrowers have suffered in an endless cycle of mounting interest and debt that feels impossible to pay off. President Biden’s proposals to improve our student loan system are welcome, and desperately needed for a system that is currently broken. It is long past time for us to begin to lift the burden of decades of ever-increasing student debt off Americans’ shoulders.

The bottom line is — if a stranger online asks for money or personal information — it is most likely a scam. I urge you to report any and all romance scams you may encounter and contact your local authorities if you suspect being a victim of one.
