For decades, big pharmaceutical companies have artificially increased the price of insulin, a life-saving drug for over 30 million diabetics, by over 600%. It’s unfair — and it’s also illegal. That’s why, this week, we filed a lawsuit against the largest insulin makers in the world — Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, and Sanofi — along with the nation’s largest pharmacy benefit managers for breaking the law and deceiving the public when they aggressively hiked the cost of the lifesaving drug.
With this lawsuit, we are seeking to tamper the skyrocketing cost of insulin by promoting price competition for the drug and eliminating unlawful, unfair, and deceptive practices.
Big Pharma might negotiate drug prices, but as your Attorney General let me be unequivocally clear: On my watch, the health and well-being of Californians is non-negotiable.
No company is too big to skirt the law or too large to be held accountable.
Sincerely,
Rob Bonta
California Attorney General

Ending Exorbitant Profits That Cost Lives
No one should be forced to ration or go without basic medication that could mean the difference between life or death. California will continue to be a leader in the fight to ensure everyone has equal access to affordable healthcare and prescription medications they need to stay healthy.

Defending Student Loan Debt Relief
The historic cancellation of federal student loan debt will ease the burden for millions of Californians weighed down by the cost of their higher education dreams. I applaud the Supreme Court for its swift consideration of this matter, and I urge it to allow the Department of Education to begin providing this sorely needed measure of relief.

Protecting Patients from Abuse
This week we secured a preliminary injunction against 19 California skilled nursing facilities for violating state and federal laws, by understaffing facilities and leaving residents vulnerable to assault, illness, and harm. When it comes to California’s skilled nursing facilities, the well-being of patients will always be an uncompromisable priority. The California Department of Justice will step in whenever the well-being of patients is at stake.

Holding Thieves Accountable
Gloria Najera-Villanueva abused her position of trust as an employee of the California Public Employees' Retirement System and stole from vulnerable retirees. This week we announced that Najera-Villanueva was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to pay full restitution to the victims she defrauded. Our DOJ team and law enforcement partners worked hard to hold Najera-Villanueva to account, and secure restitution for those she wronged.
