Across the nation, the opioid epidemic — including the fentanyl crisis — has torn families apart and taken over one million American lives. As this crisis continues, so do our enforcement efforts.
DOJ has secured over $32 billion through nationwide settlements to hold the big opioid peddlers accountable and bring funding back to our state to help combat this crisis. We are also addressing the impacts of this crisis on the ground by working with law enforcement partners to seize fentanyl, arrest dealers, and file serious criminal charges. In fact, just this week, we announced that over the last 18 months, DOJ-led taskforces have seized over 4 million fentanyl pills and arrested over 200 dealers and poison peddlers across California.
With lives on the line, we will continue to secure justice and demand accountability for those responsible for this crisis — from big pharmaceutical companies on Wall Street to fentanyl dealers on Main Street. Our work continues.
Rob Bonta
California Attorney General

Fighting the Fentanyl Crisis
Throughout the nation, we continue to address the impacts of the opioid crisis, and have in recent years seen a marked increase in fentanyl use and associated deaths. This crisis is a multifaceted public health and safety issue — and addressing this crisis requires a thoughtful and strategic approach. The California Department of Justice is all-in when it comes to protecting California families from the dangers of fentanyl. And we’re doubling down on our enforcement efforts by securing $7.9 million in the 2022-2023 budget year, and $6.7 million ongoing for the creation of DOJ’s statewide Fentanyl Task Force.

Eradicating Illegal Cannabis Grows
California has the largest safe, legal, and regulated cannabis market in the world, but unfortunately illegal and unlicensed grows continue to proliferate. This week we announced the eradication of nearly one million illegally cultivated cannabis plants and the seizure of more than 200,000 pounds of illegally processed cannabis as part of the California Department of Justice’s annual Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (CAMP) program. Beginning this fall, this seasonal eradication program will transition into a year-round task force. We're building out our efforts to address the environmental and economic harms and labor exploitation associated with this underground market.

Addressing Wildfire Risk
Local governments have a responsibility to address wildfire risks associated with new development projects early in the planning process when changes to these projects can still be made. The climate crisis is here, and with it comes increasingly frequent and severe wildfires that force mass evacuations, destroy homes, and lead to tragic loss of life. We must build in a way that recognizes this reality.
