From groceries to gas, Californians’ budgets are being stretched in ways that create real stress at the kitchen table. As California Attorney General, I will use every tool I have to keep prices down so working families can get ahead.
That’s why this week, I filed a sweeping lawsuit against Amazon alleging the company’s anticompetitive practices caused increased prices for California families. Our lawsuit alleges Amazon stifled its competition for years — not by successfully competing, but by blocking competition on price. As a result, tens of millions of Californians paid more for everyday products — and now Amazon must pay the price.
With this far-reaching lawsuit, we are sending a powerful message not only to the largest retailer in the nation, but to every corporation: If a company uses its power to illegally bend the market at the expense of California consumers, small business owners, and the economy, we will see them in court.

Protecting a Fair Marketplace for Consumers
For years, California consumers have paid more for their online purchases because of Amazon's anticompetitive contracting practices. Amazon coerces merchants into agreements that keep prices artificially high, knowing full well that they can't afford to say no. The reality is: Many of the products we buy online would be cheaper if market forces were left unconstrained. With our lawsuit this week, we're fighting back. We won't allow Amazon to bend the market to its will at the expense of California consumers, small business owners, and a fair and competitive economy.

Protecting Working Families
Buying a car is a huge financial decision for many Californians. The last thing they need is for auto dealers to drive prices even higher by tacking unnecessary junk products on to their auto loans. This week, legislation sponsored by my office to protect car buyers was signed into law.

Bringing a Dangerous Murder Suspect Into Custody
Last week, our Special Operations Unit assisted the Merced Police Department by locating and arresting the suspected killer of eight-year-old Sophia Mason. We grieve with the family and loved ones of Sophia and acknowledge that she should be here with us now — playing, learning, and growing up. We hope it brings some measure of comfort to those who loved this young girl to know that those accused of her murder will now have to face these allegations.

Defending Equity and Access in Education
Equitable access to education is critical for the well-being of our students and our communities. This week, my office stood in defense of states' ability to implement inclusive policies for all students. We can’t allow the legacy of historical discrimination to perpetuate a two-tiered society of the haves and have-nots. Education is the gateway to the American Dream.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK

As California’s chief law enforcement officer, let me be unequivocally clear: anti-Semitism has NO place in California. I was proud to join the Jewish Community Relations Council and the #HereIAM coalition this week to say that as we fight hate, we fight it together.
