On behalf of the entire California Department of Justice, we warmly wish you a Happy Independence Day weekend!
This July 4th, as we spend time with our families, fire up our grills, and enjoy community festivities, let us especially celebrate those who defend and strengthen our nation — from our law enforcement officers to civil rights organizers, our service members to educators. Indeed, Independence Day reminds us that as Americans, we all have a role in advancing freedom and defending our democracy.
As we celebrate our freedoms, our efforts to defend them continue. Happy 4th!
Rob Bonta
California Attorney General

Fighting for Reproductive Rights
Last week, I joined the Governor and other state leaders to reaffirm California’s commitment to strengthening and expanding access to safe and legal abortion. California has strong laws in place protecting reproductive freedom, including the right to safe and legal abortion. I will use the full force of the law and the full authority of my office to protect reproductive healthcare for every person. My office will continue:
Californians who believe their right to reproductive healthcare, including accessing abortion, has been violated should immediately file a complaint at oag.ca.gov/report.

Defending LGBTQ+ Community
Make no mistake: There is a coordinated, ongoing attack on transgender rights happening right now all across the country. California is putting our money where our values are and restricting state-funded travel to Arizona, Indiana, Louisiana, and Utah.

TIKTOK OF THE WEEK
The first pride was a protest. Honored to stand in solidarity with LGBTQ+ Californians at San Francisco Pride and Orange County LGBTQ Pride Parades this week. We’re going to keep pushing forward to protect and defend the rights of all.

Fighting Hate in California
This week we released the 2021 Hate Crime in California Report and highlighted information and resources to support ongoing efforts across the state to combat hate.
Reported hate crime has reached a level we haven’t seen in California since the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11. As our state’s top law enforcement officer, I will continue to use the full authority of my office to fight back. We will keep working with our local law enforcement partners and community organizations to make sure every Californian feels seen, heard, and protected.
While there is no single solution, it’s up to all of us to heed the call, because when our communities feel empowered, they come forward. Now, more than ever, it is critical that we stand united — there is no place for hate in California.

RESOURCE CORNER
California has strong laws in place protecting reproductive freedom, including the right to safe and legal abortion. In California:
- You have the right to an abortion before viability. You do not need to provide a reason for why you are seeking an abortion.
- You have the right to an abortion after viability to protect your life or your health.
- You have the right to confidentiality. If you are married, generally your spouse will not be notified about your abortion.
- You have the right to obtain an abortion without parental consent. If you are a minor, generally your parents or guardians will not be notified about your abortion.
- You have the right to have your prescription for medicine to bring about an abortion filled in a timely manner.
- You have the right to access abortion services for little-to-no charge. Abortion services should generally be covered by your health insurance.
- You have the right to have an abortion performed by a trained professional. Only authorized healthcare providers, such as licensed doctors, nurses-midwives, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, with proper training, can perform abortions.
- You have the right to ask your healthcare provider if they have objections to certain forms of medical care. Healthcare providers are allowed to refuse to perform abortions for moral, ethical, or religious reasons.
