The Newport Beach Fire Department is showing its support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the return of its annual Pinktober T-shirt campaign. Throughout October, Newport Beach fire crews will wear specially designed Pinktober shirts while on duty to help raise awareness for breast cancer and show support for survivors, patients, families and all those impacted by the disease.
By wearing pink throughout the month, Newport Beach firefighters hope to do more than simply change the color of their uniform. The campaign provides an opportunity to start conversations, increase awareness and bring the community together in support of an important cause.Members of the community can join the effort by purchasing a Pinktober T-shirt for $20, with all proceeds benefiting Susan G. Komen and its work supporting breast cancer research, advocacy, education and patient services.
Pinktober shirts are available for purchase at Newport Beach Fire Station 7, located at 20401 SW Acacia Street.
The Newport Beach Fire Department encourages residents to stop by Station 7, pick up a shirt and help turn Newport Beach pink this October.
Despite the heat, hundreds of community members joined the Newport Beach Fire Department for our annual Fire Service Day last weekend , making this years event another great success.
Families had the opportunity to spend the day with members of the Newport Beach Fire Department while enjoying activities for kids, live demonstrations, fire and life safety information, and an up-close look at the equipment and services used to keep our community safe. Most importantly, Fire Service Day gave our firefighters, lifeguards, fire prevention personnel, CERT volunteers, and other members of the department an opportunity to connect with the community we proudly serve.
This years event also helped kick off Fire Prevention Week, October 4 -10 , an annual nationwide campaign focused on reducing fires and injuries through education. The theme this year, Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower that focuses on the safe use and charging of lithium-ion battery-powered devices that have become part of everyday life. From cell phones and tablets to power tools, e-bikes, scooters, toys, and other rechargeable devices, lithium-ion batteries can be found throughout our homes. While these devices are generally safe when used properly, damaged batteries or improper charging practices can cause batteries to overheat and potentially start a fire.
Residents can help reduce the risk by following a few simple charging habits. Use the charging cord and charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer. Charge devices on a hard, flat surface rather than on beds, couches, pillows, or other soft surfaces where heat can build up, and unplug devices once they are fully charged. Larger devices such as e-bikes, scooters, and power tools should be charged outside when possible and should never be positioned where they could block an exit.
Pay attention to warning signs as well. If a rechargeable device or battery becomes unusually hot, begins to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds, stop using it. When purchasing rechargeable products, look for products that have been tested and listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
While Fire Prevention Week provides an important annual reminder, fire safety is a year-round responsibility. Make sure your home has working smoke alarms, practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in your household, and make safe charging practices part of your everyday routine.
Thank you to everyone who braved the heat and joined us for this years Fire Service Day. Events like this are about more than demonstrations and activities, they provide an opportunity for our department and our residents to connect, learn from one another, and continue building a safer and more prepared Newport Beach.
We are grateful for another successful Newport Beach Fire Service Day and look forward to welcoming everyone back again next year.

During construction of the Eastbluff Park Restroom Renovation Project, wood rot beyond what is able to be patched was discovered. The extent of the wood rot necessitates full replacement of the roof bearing timber members. Completion of the project is delayed to accommodate the additional work and is anticipated to be completed by December.
High-quality trailer-style portable restrooms are available for public use while the existing restroom is being renovated. The new roof and associated restroom improvements will ensure continued operation of the restroom for decades to come
