Dear Community Members,
Over the last couple of decades, the way we communicate has changed dramatically. Most of us now rely on wireless devices throughout the day, whether it’s with our phones, tablets or even our cars to stay connected to people, work and information. As that demand keeps growing, so does the need for stronger, more reliable service.
We’ve all experienced it at some point: dropped calls, slow speeds, or dead zones in certain parts of Newport Beach. We know those service gaps exist and understand the frustration they can cause. Staying connected has become an important part of everyday life, and we appreciate your patience as we work through improvements carefully and thoughtfully. While new technologies like satellite services will continue to grow, there is still a need to strengthen local wireless coverage within the city. The reality is, improving service often means adding more wireless facilities to increase capacity and reduce problem areas.
This past Tuesday evening, the City Council discussed ways the City can help support better connectivity while still protecting the character of our neighborhoods. The goal is to work more efficiently with wireless carriers, so they’re encouraged to invest in local infrastructure and improve coverage citywide.
The approach includes three main steps: updating parts of the City’s municipal code, refining City policies, and inviting carriers to partner with us by placing facilities on select City-owned properties. We also discussed the possibility of adjusting restrictions for certain locations on private property.
Preserving the character of our neighborhoods is important, so the City Council wants to take a methodical approach starting with municipal code and policy changes while also encouraging carriers to invest in local infrastructure. If you’d like to see the full presentation and discussion, the video from Tuesday’s Council meeting is available on the City’s YouTube channel (it was the first item on the agenda).
So, what happens next? City staff will begin drafting the proposed code and policy updates and will return to the City Council at a future public meeting for review and direction. We’ll also continue conversations with wireless carriers to share upcoming changes and new opportunities.
As always, we welcome your thoughts and feedback, and we’ll keep the community updated as this work moves forward. If you have any questions or comments, please reach out to Ben Zdeba, Principal Planner, at bzdeba@newportbeachca.gov or (949) 644-3253.
Warmly,
Seimone Jurjis, City Manager, Newport Beach
