Community Members:
The State of California has designated May 4-11 as Wildfire Preparedness Week, which aligns with the national Wildfire Community Preparedness Day on Saturday, May 3. These campaigns serve as another reminder, as we head into the warmer months, of the critical importance of taking proactive steps to protect our homes and community from the threat of wildfires.
Here’s how you can prepare and protect your home:
-
Harden Your Home: Embers from wildfires are the leading cause of home ignitions. Clear away combustible materials within the first 5 feet of your home -- this "Zone Zero" is your first line of defense. Replace mulch or dry vegetation with gravel or non-flammable alternatives and clean your roof, gutters and decks regularly. Installing ember-resistant vents and using fire-resistant building materials are effective steps to protect your home from ember intrusion.
-
Create Defensible Space: Maintaining a buffer around your home through strategic landscaping slows the spread of wildfire and creates safer conditions for firefighters. This includes thinning vegetation up to 100 feet from your property.
-
Partner with Us: Schedule a free home mitigation assessment by calling 949-644-3106.
-
Stay Informed: Register for real-time alerts through Newport Notified and find your neighborhood evacuation zone. We recommend visiting CALFIRE's website at readyforwildfire.org for more information and preparedness tips.
-
Get Trained: Join our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program to help protect your family and neighborhood. Details are at www.newportbeachca.gov/CERT.
As part of our commitment to public safety and awareness, the City has produced a short video on home wildfire preparedness. I encourage all Newport Beach home and property owners to watch and share it with family and neighbors.

In celebration of National Public Works Week, please join us for this year’s “Touch a Truck” event on Saturday, May 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at Peninsula Park.
Parking is available in the Balboa Pier parking lot.
It will be a hands-on opportunity to get up close to heavy trucks and equipment -- and learn how they are used to keep Newport Beach well maintained.
The first hour, from 9 to 10 a.m., will be quiet with no honking or lights for those with sensitive ears or eyes.
TK Burgers and Kona Ice trucks will have food and beverages available for purchase.

The City's April 26 compost giveaway, e-waste and document shredding event was a great success. Despite scattered rain showers, hundreds of Newport Beach residents made their way to the City’s Corporation Yard.
More than 800 vehicles passed through at least one portion of the event, as about 15 tons of documents were shredded, nearly 8 tons of electronic waste were dropped off and diverted from landfills, and 2,800 bags (42 tons) of compost were loaded into residents' vehicles.
The City would like to thank our partners who made this event possible: CR&R Environmental Services, which supplied compost from Orange County Waste & Recycling Department greeneries; Paper Cuts, Inc., which provided shredding services; and California Electronics, which provided e-waste collection services.
