Community Members:
I am pleased to share that the City has completed a significant improvement at San Miguel Park: the installation of Newport Beach’s first universally accessible playground.
City officials, community members and dozens of energetic children celebrated the grand opening of the new playground with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, April 23. You can watch a short video of the grand opening here.
This new play area features more than 20 accessible, ground-level elements, along with elevated components that can be reached using transfer platforms. The project also includes upgraded ADA pathways and improved parking to better serve children and families of all abilities.
The effort to create a more inclusive playground began in 2019, when a young Newport Beach resident, Alexis Portillo, attended a City Council meeting. During a public comment address to the Council, Alexis requested that the City install an ADA swing that her sister could use. Her heartfelt request led to ongoing conversations and planning by the City to create more recreational opportunities for children of all abilities.
The $900,000 San Miguel playground, at 2200 San Miguel Dr., was completed with a combination of federal Community Development Block Grant funds and City funds.
We encourage families to visit and enjoy!
City Manager, Grace K. Leung

The TK Burgers and Kona Ice trucks will be onsite with food and beverages for purchase.
