 
September is Bay Area's Transit Month
September marks the Bay Area’s 11th annual Transit Month. There are many opportunities to celebrate the public transportation that keeps the Bay Area moving. Hosted by San Francisco Transit Riders and Seamless Bay Area with support from MTC and local transit agencies, Transit Month toasts the many trains, buses, and ferries that connect the region and uplift its communities, economies, and cultures.

District Resolution Asks Counties to Put Connect Bay Area Transit Measure on November Ballot
The Public Transit Revenue Measure District in July approved a resolution accepting the District Elections Official’s certification of the Connect Bay Area Transit initiative measure and requested the Boards of Supervisors in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties to call a special election on the measure and to consolidate this special election with the November 3, 2026, statewide general election.

State Grants Provide Key Push for Highway 37 Improvements
The California Transportation Commission (CTC) in August approved a series of grants totaling more than $300 million to help reduce congestion and flooding along State Route 37 between Novato and Vallejo while also spurring baylands restoration.

Hundreds of Bay Area Students Complete Sixth Annual Norman Mineta Bay Area Summer Academy
Students from every corner of the Bay Area came together in August to celebrate the conclusion of the sixth annual Norman Mineta Bay Area Summer Academy, capping off a record-setting year for MTC's flagship youth leadership and civic engagement program. Nearly 300 high school students representing all nine Bay Area counties participated in the month-long Academy.

August brings transit schedule improvements for public, students
As part of the ongoing implementation of the Bay Area Transit Transformation Action Plan approved by MTC in 2021, transit agencies adjusted schedules in August to improve service.

Bay Wheels is now Lyft Bike
The Bay Area’s regional bike share program — a partnership between MTC, Lyft and the cities of Berkeley, Daly City, Emeryville, Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose — in July officially became known as Lyft Bike.

New Mobility and Curb Data Guidebook hits the streets
A new MTC-produced guidebook on how to manage public right-of-ways smarter and more proactively is now out. The Mobility and Curb Data Guidebook is a practical guide for Bay Area policymakers, planners, and mobility managers to manage the public right-of-way in today’s rapidly evolving urban environment.

Next Generation of Planners Wrap Up Data Exploration Projects
Data science graduate students from the University of San Francisco presented capstone projects from their nine-month 2025-2026 practicum program. The five-person cohort worked closely with mentors from MTC’s Data Strategy and Analytics section, where they gained real-world work experience and looked at MTC’s data through a fresh perspective.

MTC picks vendors for new, improved signs
The Regional Network Management (RNM) Committee has approved two vendors that will help the Bay Area transition to a new, unified design for maps and signs at nine transit hubs around the region, as well as a selection of bus stops in Solano and Sonoma counties.

Commission Gets Fresh Update on Next-Generation Clipper Transition
MTC Commissioners in July received an update on the continuing transition of the Bay Area’s Clipper® electronic transit-fare payment system from the card-based platform in use since 2010 to a new cloud-based system known as next-generation Clipper. More than 3.1 million Clipper cards have now transferred to the new system.

MTC Mourns Death of Former Leader Scott Haggerty
Former Commission Chair Scott Haggerty, who retired from MTC in 2021 after more than 20 years of service representing Alameda County, died in July. He was 68. Mr. Haggerty, who was elected by his colleagues first in 2009 and then again in 2019 to serve as MTC Chair, was the first Commission member to serve two terms as leader.
