Therese W. McMillan to Helm MTC

  MTC last month named Therese Watkins McMillan as its new executive director. This position also serves as the top executive for the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the Bay Area Toll Authority. Coming by way of Los Angeles County’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, McMillan previously served with the Federal Transit Administration under the Obama Administration, as well as with MTC, where she was the deputy executive director for Policy. MTC   Art on the Horizon: Youth Contest
Regional agencies are inviting Bay Area youth to picture the future through the first ever Art on the Horizon: Youth Confronting Climate Change photo and video contest. The contest invites young people in the Bay Area ages 13-23 to submit photos and videos that communicate what they, their families and their communities at large can do to combat climate change. The contest is open now and closes on Friday, March 22. MORE
 
 

MTC   CASA Housing Compact Moves Forward
The ABAG Executive Board at its January 2019 meeting voted to authorize Board President David Rabbitt to sign on to the CASA Compact, which identifies strategies for making housing more plentiful and affordable. This action followed MTC's vote at its December 2018 meeting to authorize Commission Chair Jake Mackenzie to sign on to the Compact. Now the focus moves to the state Legislature. MORE
 
 
MTC   Transit Center Repairs Begin
The Transbay Joint Powers Authority announced on February 1 that repair and reinforcement work is underway to address the fractured steel beams at the Salesforce Transit Center. MTC’s independent Peer Review Panel approved the repair strategy in December 2018, and work is expected to finish in June of 2019. MORE
 
 
MTC   New Subsidy Program Fuels Bay Area Vanpooling
For drivers frustrated with a long, grueling commute, it’s never been a better time to look into vanpooling, thanks to the new Bay Area Vanpool Program. The program provides direct subsidies to both new and existing vanpools. MORE
 
 
MTC   Try Carpooling Apps and Get Five Free Rides
The Bay Area Carpool Program is offering a new incentive to help reduce single drivers, emissions and congestion: Five Free Rides! All new Scoop and Waze carpool riders in the nine-county Bay Area are eligible for this promotion. MORE
 
 
MTC   Senior Housing Project Breaks Ground in San Jose
First Community Housing broke ground in February on a 64-unit, MTC-backed affordable senior housing project near the Fruitdale VTA light-rail station in San Jose. The project is funded in part by a $2.9 million loan from the Bay Area Transit-Oriented Affordable Housing Fund, which received $10 million in seed money from MTC. MORE
 
 
MTC   Startups to Tackle Transportation Challenges
After competing in City Innovate’s Startup in Residence program, four tech firms were selected by MTC this January to collaborate on innovative solutions to public sector challenges. They’ll work on projects like a developing an intelligent traffic incident dashboard for cities; standardizing a regional feed for transit agency schedules; and writing software to reduce traffic delays and increase reliability for AC Transit. MTC   Greenbacks for Green Space Conservation
With an eye toward boosting natural landscapes, green urban areas and regional recreation, MTC is inviting cities, counties, parks and open space districts in the Bay Area’s five most populous counties to submit eligible projects for a new round of Priority Conservation Area grants. A total of $8.2 million in competitive grants is available. Letters of interest are due by February 25. MORE

  Reception for Half-Light: A Photographic Study of the San Francisco Bay Trail
In honor of the 30th anniversary of the San Francisco Bay Trail, the Bay Area Metro Center Community Art Program is presenting an exhibition of recent photos taken along the trail by Kurt Schwabe. The San Francisco resident earned local fame in 2013 as the Bay Trail Trekker for his quest to walk the entire 300-plus-mile path in a single month, and since then has been spending long hours capturing the trail’s beauty and mystery at dawn and dusk, and into the night. The show runs from March 6 through September 27, with a reception scheduled for Friday, March 8. MORE

MTC   Where Low-Income Renters Face Eviction Due to Government Shutdown
This Map of the Month shows the locations and number of households that receive housing aid through a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Affairs program known as the Section 8 Project-Based Rental Assistance Program. Had the government shutdown continued, the households on this map would have seen their aid expire. MORE
