Latest Vital Signs Update Highlights Rising Commute Times and Growth in Telecommuting

Today the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and Association of Bay Area Governments (MTC/ABAG) released the latest data for commute mode choice and commute times on Vital Signs, the Bay Area’s comprehensive performance monitoring website.

Compare commuting trends on the regional, county, city, and neighborhood levels using interactive maps.

TELECOMMUTING REACHES A RECORD HIGH

While three-quarters of residents still drive to work, the decline in share of auto commuters in 2016 was mostly attributable to growth in telecommuting. This reflects congested conditions both on the roads and aboard transit vehicles, making telecommuting increasingly attractive. As a result, the share of Bay Area telecommuters in 2016 was higher than any year on record.

AVERAGE COMMUTE TIME TO WORK HITS 32 MINUTES

While the average Bay Area commute takes 32 minutes, commuting time varies widely based on place of residence, place of employment and mode of travel. A majority of Bay Area workers have commutes under 30 minutes. But when it comes to extreme commutes, Contra Costa, Solano and Alameda counties stand out for having the largest shares of commutes requiring more than one hour each way. Contra Costa County residents lead the pack with nearly one in four commuters traveling over one hour to get to work each day.
