Plan Bay Area 2040 Adopted

Plan Bay Area 2040

On July 26, the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) jointly adopted Plan Bay Area 2040, the Bay Area’s long-range blueprint to guide transportation investments and land use decisions through 2040, and its associated Environmental Impact Report (EIR).

Watch the meeting recording and review the meeting’s agenda here.

Plan Bay Area 2040 establishes a 24-year regional vision for growth and investment for the Bay Area and is the strategic update to Plan Bay Area, which was adopted in 2013. Plan Bay Area 2040 guides the Bay Area in meeting the requirements of California’s landmark 2008 Senate Bill 375, which calls on each of the state’s 18 metropolitan areas to develop a Sustainable Communities Strategy to accommodate future population growth and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks.

During Plan Bay Area 2040’s three-year plan development and public outreach process, over 200 meetings were held, more than 4,000 letters and comments were received, and over 5,000 people participated in the process. ABAG and MTC are grateful to everyone who took part in shaping the plan.

The final Plan incorporates numerous changes made in response to the public comments that we received after the Draft Plan Bay Area 2040’s release in March 2017. Comments submitted on the Draft Plan Bay Area 2040 are available for review here. Comments submitted on the Draft EIR can be reviewed here.

The draft Plan and approved revisions, as well as the Final EIR and all supplementary reports, can be viewed and downloaded at 2040.planbayarea.org/reports. The final Plan Bay Area 2040 report will be available in the coming weeks at the same location.
