United Against Hate Week (November 12-18, 2023) is a call for seven days of local civic action by people in every community to stop the hate and implicit biases that are a dangerous threat to the safety and civility of our neighborhoods, towns and cities.
In recognition of United Against Hate Week, the Library invites residents to come out to a program that demonstrates our collective solidarity in growing an inclusive, anti-racist community through kindness, action and education.
- Teens are invited to make friendship bracelets with provided crafting materials including beads, letters, string and more in the Teen Zone on Tuesday, November 14. Spread kindness by trading bracelets with new and old friends.
- Attend our Bystander Intervention and Community Safety Training for teens and adults on Thursday, November 16. In this workshop presented by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, participants will learn how to safely intervene when witnessing a hate crime or incident of bias. Presenters will also discuss school bullying with the goal of empowering students and parents with the tools needed to advocate for themselves in school.
- Watch the documentaries Not Your Model Minority and The Issue of Mr. O'Dell at our film screening on Saturday, November 18. Not Your Model Minority explores the origins of the model minority myth and reveals the many ways it has been used to create a wedge between communities of color and perpetuate divisive narratives. The Issue of Mr. O'Dell examines the lifelong work of pioneering civil rights organizer Jack O’Dell, who was a close colleague and advisor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but forced out of King's organization after President John F. Kennedy named him the number five Communist in America.
Borrow materials from our United Against Hate booklists for children, teen and adult readers on our website and check out our book and media displays in the Teen Zone and on the second floor.

Santa Clara County, like so many communities across the country, has been affected by the opioid crisis. Being informed and having access to training and resources can save lives.
Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian, in partnership with the County of Santa Clara’s Behavioral Health Services Department and the Mountain View Public Library, invites the community to a Narcan training workshop on Wednesday, November 8. The event is an opportunity for the community to learn more about the opioid crisis, the dangers of fentanyl and other opioids, and receive training in the use of Naloxone (commonly known as Narcan), a life-saving medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.
After the presentation, participants will receive a free Narcan kit while supplies last.

Noirvember and Changes to Kanopy |
|
|
We all love using Kanopy to stream movies and television shows for free through the Library. This November, Kanopy is darkening the mood with Noirvember to celebrate and share its film noir collection.
The cinematic term “noir” originated in post-World War II France. The word was used to describe American thriller and detective films from the period that featured low-key lighting and a black-and-white aesthetic with roots in German expressionist filmmaking. This fascinating genre has produced some of the greatest cinema classics including The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, Laura and many more. Check out Kanopy this Noirvember to participate in the month-long film noir festival from the comfort of your own home.
You might notice some changes to Kanopy this November. Instead of Play Credits, each user will now get 30 Tickets per month. Every title will be labeled with a ticket value and viewing window. Confused? You will see a pop-up that further explains the changes the first time you log in to Kanopy in November. For further questions, reach out to us through our Contact Us form.
