Smoke billows from the Radford fire near Big Bear Lake on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022.

Advisory amended for potential smoke impacts, extended through Sept. 9

The Mojave Desert Air Quality Management District (MDAQMD) is advising of potentially poor air quality beginning Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2022 as a result of excessive daytime high temperatures. This advisory was amended on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022, to include smoke impacts from nearby wildfire incidents. This advisory is in effect through Friday, Sept. 9, 2022 for all of the MDAQMD jurisdiction.

The so-called Radford fire, first reported on Monday, Sept. 5, was pushing smoke over MDAQMD communities on Monday evening and Tuesday morning. Additionally, smoke from other current and potential nearby incidents may impact MDAQMD communities.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an excessive heat warning for much of the desert portion of San Bernardino County last week, continuing through Friday, Sept. 9. The warning predicts daytime high temperatures up to 107 degrees.

MDAQMD bids farewell to long-time engineer

Sam Oktay, right, and Brad Poiriez at Oktay's retirement luncheon on July 29, 2022.

Sam Oktay joined District in 1999

MDAQMD Air Quality Engineer II Samuel J. Oktay, PE retired from the District at the end of July after 23 years of service to the Mojave Desert Air Basin.

Oktay was a key member of MDAQMD's permit engineering team throughout his time with the agency. He came to the District on Oct. 18, 1999 following a lengthy career in the aerospace industry.

Before his aerospace work, an engineering firm that contracted with Disney employed Oktay. There, he worked on Disneyland's famed Indiana Jones attraction among other accomplishments.

At MDAQMD, Oktay originally worked on crafting gasoline dispensing facility (GDF) permits. In fact, he was instrumental in developing the template for those permits which MDAQMD uses to this day, according to Permit Engineering Manager Sheri Haggard. She oversaw Oktay's work over the last several years.

Oktay also served on the vapor recovery committee, was an active member of the California Air Pollution Control Officers Association (CAPCOA), Air Toxics and Risk Managers Committee (TARMAC) and the Air & Waste Management Association's Mojave Chapter of the West Coast Section.

Please join us in wishing Sam the best in his next chapter!
