Hello -
I can’t believe that summer is already winding down and that the kids will be back in school soon! I hope you’ve had the chance to spend time with family and friends and make the most of the longer days.
It has been a wonderful summer for my family. We enjoyed community traditions like the Marin County Fair and the Novato Fourth of July Parade; the kids had a blast at gymnastics, soccer, and dance summer camps; we soaked up the sun swimming, hiking, and camping; and preparations are well underway for our much-anticipated arrival of Baby #3 this fall.

As we look ahead to the busy months to come, I hope you were able to create some special summer memories of your own.

Work continues toward resolving the Binford Road encampment by June 30, 2027.
Our outreach teams have built strong relationships with people living on Binford and are helping them complete the documentation, eligibility requirements, and other steps needed to be ready for housing. This work can take time and is not always visible, but it is essential: when an appropriate housing opportunity becomes available, individuals who have completed these steps are in a much stronger position to move quickly from the encampment into housing.
There are currently 42 individuals residing on Binford Road (down from its peak of 134), and 39 of them are on an identified housing pathway.
Important progress is being made, and I look forward to sharing more visible results in the months ahead.

We were deeply saddened by the passing of Marin County Chief Probation Officer Marlon Washington. I was honored to join his family, friends, colleagues, and community members at his memorial service to celebrate his life and extraordinary legacy.
We will also take time to recognize and honor Chief Washington’s service to Marin County at the August 18 Board of Supervisors meeting.
It was a privilege to work alongside Chief Washington during his time serving Marin County. He led our Probation Department with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others. Whether supporting justice-involved youth, strengthening public safety, or building partnerships throughout our community, Marlon approached every challenge with thoughtfulness, humility, and a genuine desire to make Marin County a better place.
Throughout his nearly three decades in probation, Chief Washington earned the respect of colleagues across California for his visionary leadership and his dedication to advancing justice with fairness and compassion. Yet those who knew him best will remember something even greater: his belief that leadership is about lifting others up. He invested deeply in mentoring the next generation of public servants, creating opportunities for young people to explore careers in public service and encouraging emerging leaders to reach their full potential. His legacy will live on through the many individuals whose lives and careers he helped shape and support.
Marlon possessed a rare ability to lead with both strength and kindness. He listened before speaking, treated every person with dignity and respect, and inspired confidence through his steady presence and genuine care for others. His professionalism was matched only by his warmth and generosity.
Our County has lost an extraordinary leader, a remarkable person, and a dedicated friend.

It was a pleasure to join the Bel Marin Keys Community Services District and the Marin County Sheriff's Office for National Night Out. This annual event brings neighbors and law enforcement together to strengthen community connections, build trust, and help create safer, more connected neighborhoods.

The Marin County Board of Supervisors recognized Plastic Free July by highlighting the hidden plastic pollution in synthetic clothing and the benefits of natural fibers like wool. Two local sheep joined the meeting, serving as furry ambassadors for a more sustainable future.

The Novato Fire Protection District is celebrating 100 years of dedicated service to our community. From its humble beginnings in 1926 to today's modern emergency response agency, we proudly honor the generations of firefighters, paramedics, volunteers, and staff who have kept, and continue to keep, Novato safe.

At our July 14 Board of Supervisors Meeting, I announced the formation of a Board of Supervisors ad hoc committee in response to ongoing immigration enforcement actions. I want to thank my colleagues, Supervisor Moulton-Peters and Supervisor Rodoni, for serving on the committee.
The ad hoc committee will review County interactions with ICE and other federal agencies engaged in immigration enforcement, including access to and activities on County property, as well as related policy areas. The goal is to ensure a consistent, lawful countywide approach that protects privacy, maintains public trust, and preserves access to County services for all.
Considering the July 1 guidance and model policies issued by Attorney General Bonta, the amicus brief the County joined opposing a proposed federal immigration detention facility near Gilroy, and the concerns expressed by our community - forming this committee was the appropriate next step.
I remain committed to opposing unlawful removals, federal overreach, and actions that undermine due process, community trust, and the rule of law. The County will continue to stand with immigrant residents and families through advocacy, legal action, and direct support.

For more than 50 years, the Veterans' Memorial Auditorium has been more than a venue. It has been a cultural gathering place where the Marin community came together. We know how much the Veterans' Memorial Auditorium has meant to this community, and how hard it has been to see it quiet.
As we prepare to reopen in January 2027 following the first phase of renovations, we are excited to welcome audiences back with a vibrant lineup of performances and events.
