This month’s Southern Marin Scoop is filled with resources and stories to help us strengthen our resilience—from fire safety and earthquake retrofits to signing up for emergency alerts. I encourage you to take a few minutes to review the preparedness features and share them with friends and neighbors. Together, we can keep our community safe and connected.
In this edition, you’ll also find highlights from my recent visits with community groups—from inspiring conversations with youth leaders to celebrating civic engagement with seniors—and updates on important County initiatives, events, and opportunities to get involved. Whether it’s advancing local housing solutions, supporting small businesses, or investing in safe streets, our work continues to reflect the priorities and values of Southern Marin residents.
I hope you enjoy this month’s stories and find them both informative and useful. As always, I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve you and welcome your feedback and ideas.

Marin County Board of Supervisors Adopts National Preparedness Month Proclamation
At its Sept. 30 meeting, the Marin County Board of Supervisors approved a proclamation declaring September 2025 as National Preparedness Month. The Board also received a presentation from Office of Emergency Management Director Steven Torrence, highlighting the County’s commitment to community readiness and resilience.
County Urges Community to Prepare for Disasters
Staff from the County of Marin Office of Emergency Management and Marin County Fire joined the Marin City Neighborhood Response Group led by Marin City's Felecia Gaston for a preparedness class.
A full slate of educational events have been offered this September, as part of National Preparedness Month, to help prepare the community for natural disasters and strengthen resilience before, during and after major emergencies.
Countywide efforts led by the Office of Emergency Management's Ready Marin program, have focused on meeting the community where they are. This ensures everyone living and working in Marin, especially the most at-risk communities, can access resources and participate in emergency preparedness trainings. Designed for busy schedules, these short sessions cover the essentials: creating a family plan, building a go-bag, and staying informed during emergencies. Classes also include hands-only CPR training and instruction on fire extinguisher use.
Can’t make it to an in-person event? You can start preparing today from home. Don't wait for a disaster to strike; make plans to protect yourself and your loved ones. Here are some easy steps to get started:
- Sign up to receive emergency alerts at Emergency.MarinCounty.gov.
- Make a plan with friends and family about communication before, during and after a disaster.
- Gather emergency kits (go-bags and stay boxes) with enough supplies to last several days for everyone in the household.

Slow and Say Hello
On Saturday, I spent the morning at the Slow and Say Hello event on the Mill Valley-Sausalito Multi-Use Path (MUP) with Marin County Parks and Open Space and (from left) Marin County Bicycle Coalition's Krista Hoff, Marin Conservation League's Nona Dennis and Larry Minikes, Marin Horse Council's Amory Willis, and Chief Park Ranger Kevin O'Donoghue (not pictured).
We’re all here to enjoy the beauty, adventure and wilderness of Marin’s public lands. Whether you’re on foot, hooves or wheels, slow and say “hello” when you pass fellow travelers. We all deserve safe trails. Be a partner. Spread the word! Here is more information about the Slow and Say Hello initiative, a partnership among organizations for bikes and horses including the Horse Hill Open Space Preserve.
Afterwards I spent time looking at the MUP roundabout, the beautiful kiosk in the middle of the roundabout with the great wayfinding and environmental information, as well as the improvements and additions in signage and pavement markings that have been made over time since the roundabout went in. It's really great to see this and how well that area functions now with all that has been done.

The lawsuit challenges recent Executive Orders that attempt to attach sweeping new policy requirements to grants administered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The grants finance affordable housing, social services, public safety, reliable transit, and essential airport and highway infrastructure — programs that sustain local economies and directly improve quality of life for residents.
