ADVOCATING FOR MARIN IN WASHINGTON, DC |
Dear Neighbors,
I hope you're finding time to soak in the summer season. I'm loving the cool mornings and evenings. Longer days have me thinking about submitting an entry for the Marin County Fair, exploring Tiburon Ridge and Ring Mountain trails, and stone fruit at the Farmers Market.
| OFFICE HOURS We'll be hosting an Office Hour next to the Bookmobile on Sunday, June 22, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Civic Center Farmers Market. Stop by to chat about community issues, share book recommendations, or just say hi. I look forward to seeing you there! |
The Bookmobile Is Coming to the Sunday Farmers Market! I have been advocating for the Civic Center Library to be open on Sundays, although the cost of staffing remains a barrier, we have found a solution with the Bookmobile. Starting this month, you’ll find the Bookmobile on the second and fourth Sundays, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, offering library services right in the heart of the market. As a reminder, the Bookmobile is at most Thursday Farmers Markets from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. You can find the Bookmobile schedule here.

Talia Smith - Marin County Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs Director, my Aide Julia Reinhard, and I kicked off the month with a two-day legislative visit to Washington, DC. Congressman Huffman shared the significant challenges in Washington, and we discussed our shared priorities for Marin. Senator Padilla's staff was eager to hear about our key issues, particularly preserving essential childcare slots at the Fairfax San Anselmo Children's Center. Senator Schiff was very generous with his time and attentive to our Marin priorities, and we are grateful that $3M toward the Santa Venetia Floodwall is one of his ten Homeland Security congressionally directed spending requests to the Appropriations Committee. Although the appropriation is not guaranteed, this is a significant first step.
With staff from the Army Corps of Engineers, we discussed the dredge timeline for the San Rafael Channel and the promise of a pilot that studied Gallinas Creek with an innovative nature-based technology that moves sediment out of the creek during storm events. We met with both Majority and Minority Staff of the Senate Agriculture Committee where we discussed what we would like to see in a Farm Bill if one comes forward: reducing the administrative burden for small-scale organic producers, and closing a loophole for intoxicating hemp that enables youth to access these products. We also met with the office of Congressman Panetta on these agriculture issues.
We met with the Department of Transportation, inquiring about the $2M grant the Transportation Authority of Marin was awarded for the HWY 101/I-580 Local Improvements Project in early January. Lastly, we shared Marin's e-bike safety work with the office of Congressman Min, who was a leader on e-bike safety in the California Senate. We had a packed and productive legislative visit advocating for Marin!
| CIVILIAN OVERSIGHT COMMISSION |
On June 10, the Board of Supervisors appointed nine residents to the newly formed Marin County Civilian Oversight Commission which will oversee the Sheriff’s Office and strengthen law enforcement transparency and accountability. The commission includes five district representatives and four at-large members.
The Commission was established under the authority of State Assembly Bill 1185 and formally adopted in Marin in November 2024, following recommendations from the Civil Grand Jury and extensive community outreach. The County received 67 applications for the nine-member commission, reflecting strong community interest.
Once the Inspector General is appointed, the Commission will onboard, establish bylaws, and develop strategies for community engagement. The Civilian Oversight Commission will conduct oversight of the Sheriff’s Office operations and policies, review complaints, and produce annual reports on community engagement and oversight activities. All commission meetings will be open to the public and subject to the Brown Act. Community members are encouraged to participate. Meeting details and agendas will be regularly posted on the Civilian Oversight Commission webpage.
Marin County Public Works Department invites the community to drop by to learn about proposed improvements for Marinwood Avenue and to share feedback or questions.
Date: June 24, 2025
Time: 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM

| CIVIC CENTER BLUE ROOF |
![]() |
The Marin County Civic Center, the largest public project completed by Frank Lloyd Wright, remains a landmark of architectural innovation more than 60 years after its construction. Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, its iconic blue roof continues to receive meticulous care.
Over time, dirt and debris have dulled the roof’s vibrant blue. Beginning Monday, June 16, a specialized cleaning operation will restore its original brilliance and uphold the manufacturer’s warranty. This 2.5-month effort will include high-pressure washing, hand and power scrubbing, and the use of biodegradable soap. Minor repairs will also be addressed as needed. This year’s project continues the County’s long-term commitment to preserving both the functionality and visual impact of the Civic Center, ensuring its legacy for future generations.

Ramp closure scheduled on NB US-101 at Manuel T. Freitas Pkwy
Caltrans is scheduled to close the Manuel T. Freitas off-ramp on US-101 on Friday, June 20, from 11 PM until 5 AM the next morning. The ramp is scheduled to be closed again on Saturday, June 21, from 11 PM until 7 AM the next morning. For the overall project, Caltrans is working to relocate the bus stop at the northbound Freitas Parkway off-ramp to make it safer and accessible and installing a roundabout to improve the intersection of Freitas Parkway, Civic Center Drive, and Old Redwood Highway. This change will improve traffic flow and make this busy intersection and off-ramp safer for vehicles and pedestrians. The project is scheduled to be completed in the summer or fall of 2025. For real-time traffic updates, visit the Caltrans QuickMap or 511.org.
Please stay in touch,
