I hope February treated you well!
At the county it’s been a busy month as we prepared for our annual budget workshops, which we just wrapped up this week. These workshops provide an opportunity for our Board and the community to review draft workplans for our county departments and discuss budget priorities.
I want to give thanks to our County Executive Team and all our county departments for their work in preparing for these workshops. One thing was abundantly clear this week: we are truly fortunate to have a dedicated team of employees who are here to be of service to our community.

I believe our county is on the right track with our community priorities, our ongoing commitment to equity, and our plans for continuous improvement in delivering service.
The County of Marin remains in a strong fiscal position. We have been good stewards of tax-payer dollars, paying down obligations, and are fortunate to be entering this budget cycle with a fund balance from FY 2023-24 available to program one-time funding allocations.
Following the February workshops, the county budget team will review input from the Board and the public, work with departments, and develop a proposed budget for review by mid-May. Budget hearings are scheduled for May 19, 20, and 21.
All materials and presentations from the workshops, as well as additional information about the county budget, can be found on the County's Budget Reports and Data webpage. You will find recordings from the February 24, 25 and 26 meetings on the BOS Meetings webpage.

All ten Marin County Free Library branches will undergo an interior refresh! Thanks to voter-approved 2022 Measure B funding this exciting project is underway and should be completed in early 2026. Upgrades will vary from branch to branch, but each location will see improvements. These may include new furniture, carpet, paint, accessible technology, and other improvements to make our spaces welcoming for all ages.
I encourage you to look at the details for each branch by scrolling down on the refresh page and click on the design for a specific branch to get a closer look at the plans. Please share any feedback or questions you have with our library team. These improvements will better serve our library patrons and benefit our entire community. I know my family is looking forward to it!

At Novato’s Annual Birthday Party, Paint the Town Red, two community members are acknowledged for their dedication to our community. It was an honor to participate in the recognition of this years’ awardees, Bill Long and Zachary Griggy. Congratulations to these deserving recipients!
Bill Long: Citizen of the Year Bill is a long-time Novato resident and a tireless volunteer and advocate. He has served on many boards and commissions including the Marin County Planning Commission, the Marin County Parks and Open Space Commission, and the Marin County Flood Control Zone 1 (Novato) Board since 1995 - where he continues to lead efforts for the responsible management of the Novato Creek and Rush Creek Watersheds, working diligently to prevent flooding and protect the safety of residents. As an elected representative on the Novato Sanitary District Board, Bill championed the development of single-stream recycling and the use of recycled water for landscaping.
Bill was a founder and chair of the Marin Open Space Trust and played a pivotal role in preserving critical open spaces, such as Pacheco Valle, safeguarding natural habitats, and reducing fire risks. Bill has been instrumental in trail development and management, serving on the boards of the Bay Area Ridge Trail and San Francisco Bay Trail and contributing to the publication of Trail Planning for California Communities.
With over 50 years of volunteerism, vision, and leadership, Bill Long has greatly enriched the quality of life in Novato and the greater Marin community.

A big thank you to the Caltrans Construction and Maintenance team for replacing a dilapidated fence separating Highway 101 from the multi-use path in Novato, just north of the Ignacio exit and Inn Marin. In addition to the visual improvement, the fence helps provide safe travel for path users. It's a nice improvement to Highway 101.
