With the rainy season upon us, fire season around the corner, and earthquake season ever present, now is a great time to focus on emergency preparedness.
In this edition of the Southern Marin Scoop, you’ll find details on upcoming local emergency preparedness events, important county resources, and community meetings focused on our Southern Marin flood zones. Staying informed and prepared helps keep our families and neighborhoods safe.

Join the Mayors of Belvedere and Tiburon for a Fire Preparedness Briefing, Feb, 25
Tiburon Mayor Holli Thier and Belvedere Mayor Jane Cooper are hosting “Fire Preparedness on the Peninsula” on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. in the Founders Room at the Belvedere Tiburon Library, 1501 Tiburon Boulevard, Tiburon.
The two mayors are teaming up to ensure that residents have the latest information about fire safety in Belvedere and Tiburon, and how each of us can prepare ourselves and our families for potential emergencies. Representatives from Southern Marin Fire, the Tiburon Fire District, Fire Safe Marin, the Marin Office of Emergency Services, as well as the Tiburon and Belvedere Police Departments will be on hand to address these vital issues.
Residents of Tiburon, Belvedere and Marin County are cordially invited.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors to Build Connected, Prepared and Resilient Communities
“Stronger Together: Neighbors Helping Neighbors” – A Free Community Event!
Building stronger, safer, and more connected neighborhoods starts with all of us! Westminster Events invites you to “Stronger Together: Neighbors Helping Neighbors to Build Connected, Prepared, and Resilient Communities”—a free panel discussion, reception, and information fair on Sunday, March 2, from 3:00-5:00 PM in Tiburon.
A panel of local experts will share how neighbor-to-neighbor connections can make a powerful impact by enhancing emergency preparedness, promoting social cohesion, increasing civic engagement, and fostering volunteerism.

Flood Control Zone 3: Richardson Bay
Marin County Flood Control Zone 3 was formed in 1956 to address creek and tidal flooding adjacent to Richardson Bay. Zone 3 covers over 13 square miles and is located within the Richardson Bay watershed.
It includes the City of Mill Valley and several unincorporated communities:
- Marin City
- Alto
- Sutton Manor
- Almonte
- Tamalpais Valley
- Homestead Valley
- Portions of Strawberry Point
The Zone 3 work program includes:
- Regular servicing of 13 pumps at 5 pump stations
- Maintenance of 1.3 miles of flood protection levees
- Maintenance of tide gates and trash racks
- Annual vegetation maintenance program along 3 miles of creek
- Periodic dredging of lower Coyote Creek to remove accumulated sediment in the concrete channel to improve flow conveyance

Flood Control Zone 4: Bel Aire
Marin County Flood Control Zone 4 was created in 1957 to alleviate chronic flooding in Bel Aire and adjacent undeveloped lands. The boundaries of the zone were later amended to include Strawberry Circle. Zone 4 is located within the Richardson Bay watershed.
Zone 4 covers 0.85 square miles and includes parts of the Town of Tiburon and Bel Aire and Strawberry Circle. There are 850 parcels in the Zone.
The boundaries of the Zone include the subwatersheds of East and West Creeks and Salt Works Canal, all of which drain to Richardson Bay.
The Zone 4 work program includes:
- Regular servicing of 8 pumps at 3 pump stations
- Maintenance of 0.15 miles of flood protection levees
- Maintenance of tidegates and trash racks
- Annual vegetation maintenance along 0.9 mile of creek

Southern Marin Fire Protection District Board of Directors Meeting, Feb. 26
The Southern Marin Fire Protection District is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors. Board Directors are elected by the residents, serve four-year terms and Board members must live within the Fire District boundaries.
The SMFD Board of Directors meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Administration Headquarters located at 28 Liberty Ship Way, Suite 2800, Sausalito, California 94965. The public is encouraged to attend and participate in District Board Meetings.
The next Southern Marin Fire Protection District Board of Directors Meeting is Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. at 28 Liberty Ship Way, Suite 2800, Sausalito.
