| SEPTEMBER 2024 |
Dear Neighbors,
As we settle back into our routines, this is a reminder that September is National Preparedness. Make time this month to prepare your family. This year's theme, "Start a Conversation," emphasizes the importance of discussing emergency plans with your household.

Whether you’re creating a checklist or your go-bag, now is the time to take action. Refresh your supplies, practice your plan, and make sure everyone knows what to do in an emergency. ReadyMarin.org offers guides to help you prepare. While it might be uncomfortable to talk about emergencies, taking action now can make all the difference.
| CAREER EXPLORERS SPOTLIGHT |
![]() |
The 9th annual Career Explorer Program opened doors for youth and set a new record for participation. Funded by the Marin County Probation Department, the program expanded to 34 host internship sites, offering 75 positions in public service—the largest cohort in its history. Among the many successes, one standout was Isai Rodas from San Rafael, who earned the prestigious Dan Daniels Spirit of Service Award.
My office hosted Isai Rodas as an intern for the summer. From the outset, he showed a deep interest in public service, doing his work with enthusiasm and determination. Isai attended Board of Supervisors meetings, did a job-shadowing day, and interviewed with community leaders. On the last day of Isai's internship, he hosted a National Night Out event in his neighborhood. It was a really fun night with family, neighbors, and many of the people he had connected with over the summer during the Career Explorers Program. Building on the relationships he established, Isai filed to run for the San Rafael City School Board and will be sworn in this December as a Trustee. We are incredibly proud of Isai's dedication and hard work this summer and are excited to see what he accomplishes next.
| EYES UP, MARIN |
![]() |
Starting September 23 and running through November 15, you’ll notice colorful banners and lawn signs popping up across Marin urging everyone to keep their eyes up and stay alert. These signs encourage drivers to slow down, be cautious while turning, and watch for pedestrians in crosswalks. Bicyclists are reminded to yield to pedestrians and follow traffic laws, while pedestrians are encouraged to stay focused when crossing streets.
The campaign's safety messages can be found at www.StreetSmartsMarin.org. Help spread the word by sharing these reminders with friends, family, and coworkers. The "Eyes Up, Marin" initiative is part of the Street Smarts Program and Safe Routes to Schools, both of which are funded by the Transportation Authority of Marin. This traffic safety campaign aims to raise awareness among drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists about the dangers of distracted driving, promoting safer behaviors and reducing traffic-related accidents.
| TRANSIT CHALLENGE |

Marin Commutes is kicking off the September Transit Month Challenge! This is your chance to turn your bus, SMART, or ferry trips into bonus rewards and contribute to a greener future. Give transit a try and log your trips for a chance to win prizes! Last month, I logged 17 e-bike trips which added up to 46 miles and reduced nearly 50 lbs of carbon dioxide. California Coastal Cleanup Day is celebrating its 40th anniversary on September 21, 2024. Coastal Cleanup Day is California's largest annual volunteer event. It is an opportunity for people to clean our creeks, rivers, lakes, coast, and shorelines, to help restore our environment. Virtually every body of water in California ultimately flows to the ocean, and that water can carry a lot of trash. Marine debris is a global pollution problem that impacts human health and safety, endangers wildlife, and costs local and national economies millions in mitigation and lost revenues. To join a cleanup, learn more here.
| VISIONS OF HOPE |
![]() |
Visions of Hope is a powerful new art exhibition in the Civic Center through October 24. This exhibit features artwork, writing, and spoken word from over 225 incarcerated people across eight California prisons. Visions of Hope seeks to bridge the gap between incarcerated individuals and the public, raising awareness and advocating for greater access to the arts in prisons. In California, over 200,000 people are incarcerated. One of the greatest challenges they face is their isolation and invisibility. Through the installation, their voices are brought to the forefront.
| SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH |
At the September 10th Board of Supervisors meeting, Marin County Behavioral Health and the Marin County Suicide Prevention Collaborative presented a resolution declaring September 2024 as "Suicide Prevention and Recovery Month". We collectively can change the conversation around suicide and offer support through compassionate listening, open dialogue, and connecting those in need with vital resources.
Data from 2023 shows a significant drop in suicides. The ongoing work of the Marin County Suicide Prevention Collaborative is making a difference. Join a suicide prevention event to help raise awareness and take action—together.
