AUGUST 2024
Dear Neighbors,
Summer is in full swing with so many wonderful community events. As we transition into the start of school over the next couple weeks, please drive a little slower and look out for students getting to school.
My daughter and I joined Homeward Bound of Marin for a volunteer event in partnership with the Salvation Army. Each volunteer received a list of clothing requests for students served by Homeward Bound and a $125 budget at Target. We were happy to support getting all students ready for school.
As we prepare for the return to school, families with teens can look forward to a valuable resource. The annually updated “Let’s Talk toolkit” provides guidance in navigating tough conversations about mental health and substance use. Let’s Talk Marin is an initiative between Marin County schools, local government, and community-based organizations dedicated to the wellbeing of our youth. This year, Let’s Talk will feature Community Discussions for a deeper dive with experts. Topics include The Adolescent Brain; Mental Health and Underage Substance Use; and
Let’s Start Talking: The Middle School Years. Register to attend the Community Discussion Series.
HOUSING BOND

The Bay Area Housing Finance Authority (BAHFA) voted to place a housing bond on the November ballot for the nine Bay Area counties, Regional Measure 4. This bond would raise $20 billion for the production of new affordable homes, preserving existing affordable homes, and protecting tenants. Marin’s share would be $699 million to address the housing crisis. The bond would institute an estimated tax of $19 per $100,000 in assessed property value, which is about $190 annually for a $1 million home.
We want to hear from you. The Marin County Community Development Agency is hosting meetings to gather input on the expenditure plan in preparation for the potential approval of the measure by voters. There are two meetings for North/Central San Rafael:
- virtual meeting on August 21st from 6 PM to 7 PM
- in-person meeting on August 27th from 6 PM to 7 PM at Vivalon at 999 Third Street in San Rafael
I hope to see you at a meeting and encourage you to consider Regional Measure 4 carefully when voting in the November general election. You can learn more at MarinHousingBond.org.

The 14th annual Marin County Sidewalk CPR event, sponsored by Marin County Health and Human Services and the Marin Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency, returns on Saturday, August 17, from 10 AM to 2 PM. In 15 minutes, you will learn lifesaving skills. The free trainings will take place at 13 locations throughout Marin County.
During the trainings, participants will learn how to:
- perform hands-only CPR;
- operate an automated external defibrillator (AED);
- administer Narcan nasal spray to reverse an overdose, and;
- control bleeding when someone is injured.
People with this training can make all the difference between life and death in emergency situations when every second counts. According to a recent study by the Marin County EMS Agency, nearly 90% of the almost 200 Marin County residents who experienced cardiac arrests away from a medical facility last year did not survive. Bystander CPR, particularly when administered immediately after cardiac arrest, has proven to increase the chance of survival by 60%.

The Marin IJ Marin Voice article "Dinner Meetups a Good Way to Avoid Patterns of Loneliness" by Eileen Denny Alexander emphasizes the importance of "Third Places," spaces beyond home and work where people can connect. Eileen recounts her experiences with communal dining in Marin, where she connected with others over shared food, conversation, and interests—key ingredients for building friendships. In our digital age, nurturing face-to-face connections remains vital. Eileen's article is a reminder to explore and find new friends in the process.
