WHAT I'M WATCHING

Dear Neighbors,

Summer is here, and there are many opportunities for outings within District 1! Here are some options to consider:

  • San Rafael Summer Farmers Market on 4th Street 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM Thursday evenings
  • Friends of China Camp events at China Camp State Park
  • Marin County Fair, July 3 - 7. My family always loves the Ferris wheel! And if rides aren't your thing, there are concerts, fair food, and a variety of exhibits to explore.
    • Marin Transit will be free on all fixed route buses between July 3 - 7.
    • SMART will add late-night trains after the fireworks.
    • Marin County Bicycle Coalition will offer free bike valet service from 11 AM to 11 PM near the main gate in front of the Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium.

Wishing you all a fun, safe and relaxing summer. Whether you are looking forward to enjoying more time outdoors or curling up with books, there is something for everyone to enjoy in our beautiful Marin.

PS: There are lots of free and discounted transit offerings throughout the Bay Area this summer if you want to be car free for a summer adventure. Marin Transit is free for youth 18 and under through August and SMART is free for youth and older adults.

BUDGET HEARINGS

The Office of the County Executive will present a balanced budget to the Board of Supervisors at the public hearings on June 24 - 26 that reflects the following priorities:

• Building a racially equitable community
• Investing in County infrastructure
• Preserving and increasing affordable housing choices and addressing homelessness
• Addressing County workforce recruitment and retention
• Reducing carbon emissions and adapting to climate change
• Enhancing disaster preparedness

The Monday, June 24 session begins at 9 AM with opportunity for public comment. Those interested in contributing comments may join online or in the Board chamber at Suite 330, Marin County Civic Center, 3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael. The hearings continue at 1:30 PM Tuesday, and the final Wednesday session starts at 1:30 PM. A detailed schedule will be uploaded to the Board’s webpage by June 20. Copies of the proposed 2024-2026 budget are available online. I want to hear your feedback. Please share your thoughts with me by June 24.

PRESCRIBED BURN

A prescribed burn scheduled for June 20 and 21 in the St Vincent's area of San Rafael may produce smoke in Novato and San Rafael. Smoke will also be in full view to commuters on Highway 101. Please refrain from calling 9-1-1 to report smoke from the burn area.

RAINWATER CATCHMENT

Public Works, Water Agencies, and Pollution Prevention Program Logo images in a line

While we were fortunate to have significant rainfall this winter, rainwater is precious. There are incentives available for residents and businesses to collect rainwater for reuse. The Board allocated $20,000 in funding for the Marin County Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program to bolster Marin Water and the North Marin Water District incentive programs. Learn more about the increased rebate opportunities and how to apply.

NUTRITION AND CONNECTION

Making ends meet in Marin often isn't easy, and some of us need assistance to ensure good nutrition for ourselves and our families every day. Because food insecurity increases risk for a wide range of health problems, food access is a health equity priority.

CalFresh provides monthly benefits for purchasing food for lower-income residents. The number of Marin residents enrolled in CalFresh increased from 9,182 to 15,684, between 2019 and 2024. It is imperative that everyone eligible for food benefits knows how to access a food debit card through CalFresh. If you know someone who might qualify for CalFresh, apply online at https://BenefitsCal.com or call 877-410-8817 to have an application mailed.

Looking to meet someone for lunch? Marin Health and Human Services provides Congregate Meals for adults age 60+. For more information or to sign up, call 415-473-INFO (4636). I enjoyed a round of bingo last month following a Congregate Meal. These meals provide an opportunity to enjoy lunch while making new friends or catching up with longtime ones.

WHAT I'M WATCHING

San Rafael Mayor Kate Colin is featured in this CBS Sunday Morning story, she spoke about the impacts of the U.S. Supreme Court’s upcoming Grants Pass v. Johnson decision. This story outlines the complexities of addressing homelessness and encampments, from how to best serve unhoused people, to building housing, to ensuring public safety and access to public spaces for all.

We are excited to announce the grand opening of Marin County's Emergency Command Center! This state-of-the-art facility integrates fire and emergency medical services for unified, efficient countywide response times. Thank you to Marin County Fire Chief Weber and all the partners who made this possible.
