At our Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday we approved the appointment of Marin County native (and Novato High graduate!) Derek Johnson as Marin’s next County Executive.
Derek was selected following an extensive nationwide search that began in November and resulted in 57 applicants. Derek stood out among a very competitive candidate pool, and our Board was impressed with his experience and achievements.
Derek has more than 25 years of local government management experience. For the past 12 years, he has been with the City of San Luis Obispo, where he served as City Manager for six years, and previously as Assistant City Manager and Director of Community Development. Prior to that, he worked as the Director of the Office of Long-Range Planning in Santa Barbara County’s Planning and Development Department, and 10 years as General Manager of Parks and Recreation in Goleta.
Johnson has a bachelor's degree in environmental studies from UC Santa Barbara and has certifications in mediation, project management, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
In his role as County Executive, Derek will lead efforts to advance our Board's objectives and strategic plans while overseeing the County’s $783 million budget and workforce of over 3,000 employees.
Johnson’s accomplishments align well with our Board's priorities. In San Luis Obispo, he played a key role in ensuring long-term financial stability, improving city operations’ efficiency, and securing new sources of revenue. He championed efforts to address homelessness, including implementing a Homeless Strategic Plan, opening a homeless services center, establishing the city’s first Mobile Crisis Unit, and securing $30 million in grants for additional supportive housing. He also oversaw various projects and successfully executed important policy initiatives, such as an Economic Strategic Plan, Climate Action Plan, and Diversity Equity and Inclusion Strategic Plan.
Derek is scheduled to start in his new role on April 29 and will succeed longstanding top administrator Matthew Hymel, who is retiring.
I know Derek will make a great addition to the County Team, and I look forward to working with him.

Marin County, it’s time for a test. Don’t worry, it’s not a pop quiz, and you will have time to prepare!
On Saturday, March 23, the County’s Office of Emergency Management will conduct a countywide test of our emergency notification system at 10 AM to cell phones, landlines, and emails of people registered for AlertMarin. AlertMarin is the County’s primary system to alert residents of an urgent need to evacuate, shelter in place, or take some other protective action.
If you live or work in Marin County, I encourage you to sign-up to receive emergency alerts ahead of the test. If you are already registered, take a moment to sign-in and manage your account by verifying that your contact information is up to date. Registered participants can update their information at any time by visiting the AlertMarin website.
It takes less than 10 minutes to register for a service that could help protect you and your loved ones in the event of a major disaster or emergency.
