Here are some helpful tips to get you started:
- First, Sign up for alerts, safeguard important documents, and take other low-cost and no-cost preparedness actions today to lessen the impact of disasters and emergencies on you and your family. For example, if you depend on Social Security or other regular benefits, switching to electronic payments is a simple, important way to protect yourself financially before disaster strikes.
- Second, Make a Plan with your friends and family for how you will communicate before, during, and after a disaster. If you have a communication-related disability, note the best way to communicate with you.
- Next, gather Emergency Kits (Go Bag and Stay Box) with enough supplies to last several days for everyone in your household. Remember to consider any unique needs that individuals or pets may have in case you need to evacuate quickly. Tip: Keep support items like wheelchairs and walkers in a designated place so they can be found quickly.
- Finally, Create a Support Network. Identify, family, friends and others who can assist you during an emergency and share your disaster plans with them.
When disaster strikes, you need to be ready at a moment's notice to pack up and go. Here are some tips to prepare your technology in the event of an emergency.
-
Back Up Your Data. Whether you back up your data to the cloud, an external hard drive, or both, make sure that you have good backups of your data. If storing on an external hard drive, pack it in your emergency kit.
-
Update Your Devices. Set your devices and software to automatically update and install any updates as they become available. Those updates don’t just contain new features, but fix security flaws to help keep you protected.
-
Share your location with family members. Location sharing can help you find your family members in the event you get separated.
