Did you know Manhattan Beach banned leaf blowers in 1998? Leaf blowers can stir up harmful airborne particles such as pollen, pesticides, mold spores, animal waste, and heavy metals like lead and mercury.
Instead of blowing leaves away, consider raking, sweeping, or letting them naturally mulch your yard.
Mulched fallen leaves can help:
- Suppress weeds and keep soil moist
- Return nutrients to your lawn and garden as they decompose
- Provide habitat for local pollinators
Help Keep Manhattan Beach Clean!
If you see a leaf blower in use in Manhattan Beach, report it to Code Enforcement at (310) 802-5518 or via email to code@manhattanbeach.gov.

Fall is here and winter is right around the corner! This time of year we have lots to celebrate. Here are some tips to keep it green this season and celebrate sustainably. |
|
Low Waste Gift Giving
Did you know most gift wrap isn't recyclable? Wrapping paper and gift bags that are shiny, sparkly, or have glitter cannot be recycled. Choose more sustainable gift wrap like 100% paper wrap, upcycled kraft paper, newspaper and comics, old maps, fabric, and more!
Try this for a new fun family tradition: let the kids decorate kraft paper or old paper grocery bags with paints and markers to make their own recyclable gift wrap. Those receiving the gifts will love the creative personal touch!

Reduce Light Pollution
Ambient light at night can have harmful impacts on pollinators, animals, and even on us. When decorating for the holidays this season, keep the local critters in mind and reduce light pollution with these easy steps:
- Use timers to prevent lights from being on all night (you'll save energy and money, too!)
- Reduce the brightness of outdoor lights by 50%
- Use warm tone lights (red, orange, yellow)

Keep Food Scraps Out of The Landfill
When prepping all those delicious meals this holiday season, don't forget to place your food scraps and trimmings in your green cart for organic collection!
For easy collection, place food scraps in a paper bag, pail, bucket, or other upcycled container, then dump the contents into your green bin.

Meet Environmental Programs Intern Katherine Lecuyer
"My name is Katherine Lecuyer, and I’m excited to share a bit about myself with the sustainability community here in Manhattan Beach.
|
|
|
I recently graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a B.A. in Environmental Science and Policy, and I am currently pursuing my Master of Science degree in Geographic Information Science (GIS). My studies and future project will focus on how mapping and spatial technologies like remote sensing can be applied to conservation, land management, and sustainable urban planning.
I have a strong passion for advancing policies like California’s Room to Roam Act (AB 1889), which works to protect and connect wildlife corridors. I believe that sustainable planning must place both people and ecosystems at the center, ensuring that future development supports biodiversity, climate resilience, and community well-being.
Beyond the classroom, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering with the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service in Montana, where I worked on habitat restoration and trail maintenance. Experiences like these have strengthened my commitment to environmental stewardship and inspired me to continue my passion for bridging science, policy, and technology to create solutions that will balance human needs of expansion with the health of our environment in the forefront of our minds."
