Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) Board of Directors unanimously voted, at its regularly scheduled Board meeting, for President Jay Lewitt to succeed Glen Peterson as LVMWD’s representative to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s (MWD) Board of Directors. On May 21, the LVMWD Board of Directors presented Peterson with a proclamation honoring his contributions to the District and our communities upon his retirement from the Board.
Peterson was instrumental in advocating for increased infrastructure and new source water options during his historic tenure at MWD. Through his 31 years as the MWD Representative, Peterson was integral to several important efforts such as the construction of Diamond Valley Lake, negotiation of the Quantification Settlement Agreement for MWD on the Colorado River, and addressing the challenges faced by member agencies serving MWD’s State Water Project-dependent areas. These efforts helped keep water supplies flowing to both LVMWD and the MWD service area.
“Our community owes a huge debt of gratitude to Glen for his service,” commented President Lewitt. “I met Glen when I ran for the LVMWD Board in 2014 and he really took me under his wing. I am proud and grateful to serve as the new MWD Representative and eager to advocate for resiliency for the entire region and ensure reliability for both LVMWD customers and Southern California. Our partnership with MWD is one of our most important relationships.”
Lewitt’s vision as the new MWD Representative is to enhance the reliability and affordability of Southern California’s water supply while strengthening relationships with local and regional partners.
MWD, the nation’s largest wholesale water provider serving more than 19 million residents throughout Southern California, is governed by a Board comprised of representatives from each of its 26 member agencies. MWD gets water from both the State Water Project and the Colorado River Aqueduct. Since LVMWD purchases 100% of its drinking water supply from MWD, Lewitt’s presence on the Board will be key to ensuring the District’s interests are properly represented. As LVMWD’s Representative, Lewitt will be an important voice on topics ranging from California water issues to the management of the Colorado River.
“After serving on this board for nearly two years, I have not only developed a new appreciation for water, but I’ve learned a great deal about what goes into getting water to our homes from President Lewitt,” said LVMWD Board Director Gary Burns. “I am excited and have the utmost confidence that he will lead our district and region into a more resilient future.”
