Community Readiness Assessment for
California Tribes Published

|
On April 23, 2026, CalRecycle published the Community Readiness Assessment for California Tribes in partnership with Kauffman and Associates and Tribes throughout California. This assessment tool is an optional planning tool to assist Tribes in identifying their degree of readiness for composting programs and determining the ideal program scale.
The Community Readiness Assessment was developed as part of the Tribal Composting Needs Assessment. The Tribal Composting Needs Assessment Report draws on extensive engagement with Tribes throughout California to identify the priorities, challenges, and resources needed to develop and operate composting facilities. Composting supports landfill diversion efforts, strengthens climate resilience, and honors the interconnectedness between land, culture, and community.
CalRecycle would like to thank the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, Chicken Ranch Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians, and Big Valley Band of Pomo Indians for hosting workshops to inform the Needs Assessment and to learn about their composting programs.
