The Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) is seeking innovative ways to combat the illegal dumping of mattresses, box springs and futons in California communities. MRC is now soliciting applications to fund pilot programs that could serve as models to prevent or eradicate this type of activity. The maximum award will be $100,000. Four broad areas of potential pilot programs that will be considered for funding include:
- Education programs should spread information about existing mattress collection channels.
- Improved awareness or enforcement of illegal dumping laws for mattresses.
- Establishing or improving mattress drop-off programs.
- Beautification of an area affected by blight to deter illegal dumping.
In evaluating proposals, additional points may be awarded to projects focused on beautification or within an environmental justice area—a community disproportionately impacted by environmental pollution. Well-maintained and clean communities discourage littering and illegal dumping. Clean communities also contribute to the overall health and well-being of their residents and the sustainability of the environment.
The deadline for submitting proposals is Nov 15, 2024.
