Art in Public Places:
Remnant Totems (2024)
|
Art Piece: Remnant Totems (2024)
Location: La Quinta City Hall The Hub Hallway
Cassidy Watt is a metal artist based in Madrid, New Mexico. Raised in New York City, Watt graduated from New York Institute of Technology in 2002 with a Fine Arts degree. Watt’s Remnants Totems showcase his impeccable wood and metal working skills. His manipulation of metals combines a variety of techniques and begins with the application of various patinas to aluminum, copper, steel, and brass. Watt then applies a torch and hammer to the metals, creating beautiful designs and textures. Watt employs formulas developed through experimentation as well as by accident to apply chemical fuming, resist processing, and acid pickling to the metal. Scourged, scorched and scarified, the various results can be juxtaposed into a vertical totem form to create confrontations of reaction and resolution. As totems, this stacking of texture, colors and tone invokes the complexity of emotional language. Watt’s metalwork twists and interlaces like the Brooklyn Bridge, but is then weathered by caustic forces reminiscent of the New Mexican sun.
