Art in Public Places:
Grace and Milo
Art Piece: Grace and Milo (2019)
Artist: Michael Gard
Location: Wellness Center
Grace and Milo are beautiful wire sculptures displayed in the lobby of the Wellness Center. Artist Michael Gard creates his sculptures using a wire weaving technique he invented as a teenager. Each figure begins as a block of clay and a spool of wire. The clay is sculpted and then reproduced in wax. Individual lengths of wire are woven and knotted stitch-by-stitch around the wax form. Finally, the wax is melted away, leaving a rigid figure, both light and strong. Grace and Milo were purchased during the 2019 La Quinta Art Celebration.
