Art in Public Places:
New Acquisition: Gold Star Family Monument
The Gold Star Family Monument in Civic Center Park is nearly complete. Artist CJ Rench finished installing the main components of the sculpture on Wednesday, April 26, and City staff are preparing to add the finishing touches to the beautiful art piece. Within the next few weeks, a walking path and lighting will be added around the monument, providing a 360-degree view. Additionally, City staff plan to include a plaque to describe the significance of Gold Star Families.
The title of Gold Star Families is reserved for families of military members who have died in the line of duty and is meant to honor the service member’s ultimate sacrifice while acknowledging their family’s loss, grief, and continued healing. The sculpture features three layers of stainless-steel stars with bronze patinas and was designed to include elements similar to the Veterans Acknowledgement Monuments. The center of the sculpture features a 3D glass star with a saluting soldier cast into it. The body of the art piece is hollow through the back so light can shine through.
New Acquisition: La Quinta's Harmony
La Quinta’s Harmony is one of Charles Sherman’s Miracle Towers, sculptures inspired by the pyramids of Ancient Egypt and based on interpretations of the tetrahedron geometric form. The 10-foot tall sculpture in Civic Center Park was fabricated from hand-welded stainless steel and features a chemically activated patina that creates the turquoise-blue color. The convergence of the triangles at the apex of the art piece is counter-pointed by the stability of the perfectly balanced triangles that meet at the sculpture's base.
Wherever a Miracle Tower is placed, the magic of its strength, balance, and the wisdom of the ages is evoked by the sculpture’s pyramid energy. La Quinta’s Harmony is meant to activate the environment in which it is placed and serves as a visual totem to manifest personal miracles.
