I want to uplift the importance of taking heat safety seriously as high temperatures continue throughout the week. Staying hydrated, remaining indoors when you can, and being sure to regularly check on the older adults, and any vulnerable loved ones - including your pets - can make a big difference. Please visit Ready.LACounty.gov/heat to find a cooling center near you and to access other heat-related resources.
Residents should also check their neighborhood conditions using the National Weather Service HeatRisk map.
And be aware of the warning signs for heat stroke and other heat related illnesses, so you can take action quickly.
Also, County libraries have been activated as cooling centers and are available during normal operating hours. Learn more at LACountyLibrary.org/coolingcenters.
I recently teamed up with Ascend at the Aspen Institute to co-host Forward With Families - a forum that convened leaders in education, community organizations and County Department Heads to identify solutions for expanding access to quality, affordable child care for parents pursuing postsecondary education and credentials.
With at least 68,000 postsecondary students in Los Angeles County also raising children, student parents face significant barriers to completing their education—including limited access to child care. This is why collaborative discussions on policy and systems change at the college, city, and county levels, with a shared goal of helping more student parents access child care, complete their education, and create greater economic opportunity for their families are so important.
I look forward to the insights shared turning into stronger support for the families we serve. To learn more visit: ascend.aspeninstitute.org/forward-with-families.
At this week’s Board Meeting we heard from Dr. Lucy Jones, Director of the Center for Disaster Resilience, and County Departments, to discuss earthquake preparedness. If you missed last month’s Sippin’ My Tea, where I covered how to put together an emergency kit, check out this video to learn more about building your own kit here.
For more info on what to do before, during and after an earthquake visit: ready.lacounty.gov/earthquakes/ and check out the County’s PSA.
