Dear Neighbor,
I recently joined the Can’t Stop California coalition to discuss something fundamental to our democracy, and that’s protecting the right to vote.
I was proud to stand alongside elected officials from all levels of government, LA County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean Logan, who leads the team responsible for administering fair, accessible elections in Los Angeles County, and community leaders to reaffirm our shared commitment to protecting every voter’s right to make their voice heard.

With just five weeks until the November 3 General Election, it’s important to stay informed and know the facts - including that the Secretary of State confirmed the latest federal voter-database ruling does not change California’s election rules for November. For more information on how this impacts LA County, read the statement shared last Friday from Registrar-Recorder Dean Logan below:
The bottom line is this: don’t let uncertainty or misinformation keep you from exercising your right to vote. Make a plan, get your information from trusted sources and encourage your family, friends and neighbors to participate too.
The voter registration deadline is October 19, for the upcoming November 3 election. Learn more and make your plan to vote at plan.lavote.gov.
Sincerely, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District

Earlier this morning our South Bay communities felt an earthquake centered near Hermosa Beach, thankfully there have been no reports of injuries or significant damage. This does raise the importance of emergency preparedness, especially as we look ahead to the County’s storm season which typically begins in mid-October and lasts through early spring.
While the County’s storm season typically begins in mid-October and lasts through early spring, now is a good time to get prepared for the possibility of a wetter-than-normal winter and severe storms. Sign-up to receive email updates on LA County El Niño Preparedness here, and check out additional info on ways to prepare here: http://ready.lacounty.gov/rain
Here are a few steps you can take now:
- Sign up for emergency alerts at ready.lacounty.gov
- Make a family plan and prepare a multi-day supply kit; check out this video for tips on preparing a starter go bag for less than $25.
- Consider signing up for flood insurance.
- Know whether your area is at risk for mud or debris flows.
- Prepare your home and property before heavy rain:
- Clean gutters, downspouts and storm drains.
- Repair roof leaks before storm season starts.
- Pick up sandbags before storms.
Stay informed before and during storms
You can also call (800) 933-0930 (Mon-Thur / 8:00-5:00pm) to speak with a Public Works engineer about mud and debris flow preparedness.
We'll be sharing more on emergency preparedness on Sippin' My Tea this evening at 6:00pm!
Starting October 1, 2026, the Trump administration’s H.R.1 law is narrowing eligibility for full-scope Medicaid to certain immigration statuses, meaning some individuals will no longer qualify for federally funded full-scope Medi-Cal.
For residents who may be affected, it’s important not to assume you are losing Medi-Cal on October 1. California is providing state-funded full-scope Medi-Cal through June 30, 2027.
Here are additional steps to take:
-
Keep your Medi-Cal active: Continue using your coverage and seeing your doctor as usual. Most Medi-Cal members will not experience a change in coverage on October 1.
-
Renew on time: Respond to renewal notices and provide any information requested by LA County’s Department of Public Social Services (DPSS).
-
Update your contact information: Make sure the County has a current mailing address, phone number and email so important Medi-Cal notices aren't missed.
-
Check whether your immigration status has changed: If someone has obtained a Green Card, become a citizen, received another qualifying status, or has another change in circumstances, it could affect their eligibility.

As part of our 2nd District Community Budget, Team Mitchell visited local high schools to help get student representatives to serve on the Advisory Committee for our Willowbrook and Athens-Westmont communities.
We look forward to sharing the selected Advisory Committee members in the coming weeks. In the meantime, there are still ways to stay involved with the Community Budget. If you’re a Willowbrook or Athens-Westmount resident, sign-up here to stay updated and to learn about ways to share ideas for how the community budget should be invested back into your neighborhood.
Also, if you’re a part of a community-based organization that may be interested in becoming a Community Engagement Partner to help promote this initiative with local residents, sign-up to be notified once the Community Engagement Partner application is live.

A big thank you to our host MudTown Farms with the Watts Labor Community Action Committee, and to all the organizations that participated by sharing resources and a commitment to expanding food access; LA County Department of Social Services, Food Access LA, CropSwap LA, and Social Justice Learning Institute.
Everyone who joined us left with a box of fresh produce and seeds to begin growing their own food at home. To learn more about MudTown Farms, visit https://wlcac.org/services/mudtown-farms/
