This Labor Day weekend, we want to make sure beachgoers and our coastal communities are aware of the High Surf Advisory issued by the National Weather Service Los Angeles that is in effect through Labor Day. Expect stronger rip currents and larger waves as a result of Tropical Cyclone Marie. Beachgoers should stay alert and check in with a lifeguard for the latest conditions before getting in the water.
I know there has also been a lot of discussion about El Niño, a climate pattern that occurs when parts of the Pacific Ocean become warmer than usual. This extra warmth can influence weather patterns around the world and cause some areas to experience more rain.
It’s important to think of El Niño as a climate pattern that can influence weather conditions over a large area and an extended period of time, rather than as an isolated weather event. For more information, check out a clip from National Weather Service meteorologist Ariel Cohen’s presentation at our Board of Supervisors meeting this week.
As a result of El Niño, we anticipate more rain during the upcoming storm season, which is why we’re asking all residents to get prepared now. Here are some steps you can take:

With the long Labor Day weekend ahead, I want to be clear: LA County has zero tolerance for illegal street takeovers. Far too many communities have seen how one moment of recklessness can have lifelong consequences.
Just this morning, LA County Sheriff’s Deputies from our Compton and Carson stations wrapped up supporting a City of Los Angeles, LAPD-led operation to stop a street takeover in the Harbor Gateway/West Rancho Dominguez community. The operation resulted in arrests and vehicles being towed, you can view the news clip on this here. If you know someone who is participating in street takeovers or street racing, talk to them. I recently had the opportunity to visit California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) and meet with President Dr. Mary Ann Villarreal to see firsthand where the new Mobility Hub will be built - an important project that my office is proud to support with a $2 million investment. The state-of-the-art Mobility Hub will create safer pedestrian connections, improve transit access, enhance bicycle and mobility infrastructure, expand tree canopy for shade, and ultimately strengthen the connection between CSUDH and the communities it serves.
I also had the opportunity to tour other key expansions to the campus including construction for onsite housing, and the new Health, Wellness and Recreation Center. I look forward to these investments benefiting students and the surrounding South Bay community.

Through our 2nd District Arts & Culture Access Initiative we took over 400 residents from throughout our district to see the David Geffen Galleries for free and enjoy jazz night at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) - for many attendees, this was a first-time visit! LA County voters passed the Essential Services Restoration Act (Measure ER), a temporary one-half cent sales tax to help support essential public health services and programs. The County’s Department of Public Health is hosting a series of community meetings to hear from residents on how future Measure ER investments can best support the health and well-being of people and communities across the county.
